We were approaching Nashville from the North, beging to sense we were close because we saw several log cabins along the route. It was lunch time and when we drove by Brownie's Bean Blossom Restaurant we quickly found a U-turn spot and returned. This place reminded me so much of small town eateries we have visited in Iowa. The waitresses, cook and customers all knew each other. Gossip was plentiful. Perhaps gossip is to harsh a word, but they sure were taking care of each other. There are two Big Woods restaurants in Nashville. This one on the main drag is family oriented. Tables are far enough apart to accomodate baby strollers and wandering children. It is on the ground floor of a complex of small stores. I found an elusive Dept 56 village piece in a shop upstairs.There is a spacious dining area with interesting etched glass, limestone blocks and wood carvings. We had been bickering about where to go for lunch. We had been shopping and had wandered away from "restaurant row" in downton Nashville. Bill didn't want to walk a long way back to any place I suggested. The guide map had a fork near where we were but all we saw was a sign saying General Store and Bakery. We ate here twice during our stay in Brown County. That says a lot for the place because there were many places to choose from. Our first visit was in the evening and the front half of the dining room was quite full so we four selected a table towards the back. I had a really yummy adult grilled cheese(s) sandwich with bacon, onion and tomato on marble rye.. Bill went for the pulled pork and wasn't disappointed with that or the homemade chips. Besides sandwiches there were wraps, burgers, pasta, burritos and veggie selections. Bill had wanted a cup of their Muddy Bean Soup, but it was late and the kettle was dry. While eating, I noticed two rather large speakers on either side of our table. I asked the waitress if there was live entertainment. There was,Blue Grass, and he arrived to set up, tune up just as we were finishing. No offense to the musician we heard good reviews of his music, but sitting between those speakers brought back memories of concert ear damage of our youth. We left instead of lingering over our most satisfactory meal. I really think this would be a fun place to drop into in the evening for a drink and listen to the music...from a distance.

We returned later and the week so Bill could have that bowl of Muddy Bean Soup. He was happy and I was happy with a repeat of the grilled cheese in an item called Judi Judi Judi, a half sandwich and cup of tomato basil soup. We both practically licked the bowls clean, it was so good. We could have had some great homemade desserts, too. I saw a cardamom cake that made my tongue tingle in anticipation but it cost a lot. Bill was tempted by a fancy cheesecake.

Except for the cardomom cake, the prices were reasonable, the service was friendly and the atmosphere comfortable. Local art is displayed on thee walls. The most appropriate was a painting of three guys wearing John Deere hats standing in front of a huge piece of farming equipment....the muddy boots were out of frame, but I'm sure they were there.
