All of the lakeside towns on Garda are pretty, and some have castles. But many people feel Malcesine is the prettiest. Here's my short list of activities: 1) Take a lakeside stroll at dusk. Most of the day-trippers will be gone, and the castle and lake views will be at their most magical, especially with the swans out trolling. (bring bread) 2) Visit the castle and climb to the top. 3) Take a ferry ride to other towns, or just to loop around the Lake. 4) Wander through the narrow, pedestrian only streets and shop for silly souvenirs. 5) Beginning 2002 you will be able to take the re-built funicular up to the top of Monte Baldo. (Unfortunately, until then it is closed.)...Read More

Most Garda lake towns are lined with basic tourist hotels just on the outskirts of town. Hotel Paina is one of them, and is a decent value, at ~$80 for two people for a room, breakfast AND dinner in the off season. (The breakfast is decent, the dinner less so.) The hotel is about 2km from the center of town. All that is visible from the street is the parking lot (on top of the hotel.) Hotel Piana is rated a 3-star, and the decor and the rooms are basic, not beautiful. But the real attraction is the lake view from the balcony rooms. Pay the $10-$20 extra to have this unabstructed view, only 50'' from the shore. With Lago di Garda in the background and the Castello di Malcesine to keep you c...Read More

Many Garda hotels offer their guests a half-pension option. At Hotel Paina, it's put in the standard price, with those people who don't want the dinner getting a mere 10.000 L (~$5) discount. But is it worth it? The hotel (and much of Garda) has many German guests. Therefore, the food is Italian food cooked by Italians for Germans. In my opinion, this is still better than Italian food cooked by Germans, or, heaven forbid, German food cooked by anyone. The limited menu focuses on meat, potatoes, and rich sauces. But the salad and antipasto buffet at the beginning is nice, and, after a long day of sightseeing, this food hits the spot. So it's worth eating here if you are staying...Read More

Malcesine Castle at Dusk Photo - Castello Scaligero di Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy

Historically Garda is the most contested all the lakes in the Italian lake district (La Regione di Laghi). One pleasant byproduct of past hostilities and border tensions is that there are many impressive castles. The ones built by the Scaligeri (Medieval Veronese warlords) are particularly picturesque, with their fish tail battlements. Fine examples are at Sirmione, Verona, Soave, but my favorite is this one at Malcesine. The castle dominates the lakeshore and rises above the town. Visitors approach by foot through a labyrinth of twisting passageways and for a fee can enter during the day. Inside are several interesting exhibits, some with English translations. There's a primer on Garda g...Read More

The best way in Garda to hop from town to town is on the ferry. Buy a ticket before boarding at the stand in front of the docks. The round trip that we took was from Malcesine to Riva, with a stop at Limone. Passengers are treated to unobstructed views of the other lakeside towns and the boat passes close to the mountains that plunge into the lake between Limone and Riva. This is a view you cannot get by car, as you would be in tunnel after tunnel. Be warned that even on a sunny and warm day lake crossings are windy and chilly, especially if you decide to sit in the open area up front for the best view. But what are a few goosebumps compared to the thrill of riding the waves back to Malces...Read More

Garda is known for being a center for sporting holidays, and Malcesine in particular is a world-reknown windsurfing center. Even though we were there in October, when the weather was starting to get nippy, there were still plenty of windsurfers out on the Northern part of the lake. Below is a weblink with contact information for those who are interested in getting wet- by windsurfing, sailing or even paragliding!
