Victoria Falls offers visitors a unique opportunity to blend the natural wonder and beauty of one of the largest waterfalls in the world with options for adventure travel, luxury resorts, wildlife viewing, and experiencing Africa in a way that more developed parts of the continent, such as South Africa, afford.Getting There:Victoria Falls is located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and perhaps the easiest way to get in and out of the region is by air. Two airports serve the falls area, one each in Zambia and Zimbabwe. We flew into the Livingstone Airport (LVI), on the Zambian side, but the Victoria Falls (VFA) airport is also available in Zimbabwe. Depending on whic...Read More

Victoria Falls has national parks located on both sides of the Zambezi River, in both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Since we were staying in Zambia, we only visited that side of the falls. We had hoped to visit the Zimbabwe side as well, but unfortunately time and an approaching thunderstorm did not permit us to do so. After we returned to the Royal Livingstone Hotel from our tour Livingstone Island, we headed over to the park to view the falls from across the gorge. This small park contains several paved walking trails across the gorge from the falls that parallel the gorge. During the wet season these paths allow for amazing views of the falls stretching out ahead, and put visitors right into the middle of t...Read More

Our entire reason for going to Livingstone, Zambia was to visit Victoria Falls. And, it so happened we would be visiting the falls during some of the driest season of the year, which meant that the flow of the Zambezi at the falls would be but a tiny fraction of its peak. This meant we would not get to see the spectacular sight of the falls and mist in their full glory. However, it did mean we would have some opportunities not available during the wetter periods of the year, including a tour of Livingstone Island and swim in the Devil’s Pool, a natural swimming hole formed by rocks at the very top of the main falls. When my partner heard me talking about this possibility, and saw the photos in the ...Read More

On our first night in Livingstone, Zambia, we decided to take one of the sunset cruises up the Zambezi. We were booked on the cruise departing from the David Livingstone Resort by Susan, our innkeeper’s assistant at Chanters Lodge. Susan provided us with a voucher confirming our reservation, and asked us to be in the hotel lobby at a certain time to meet our pickup for the tour. As promised, a small bus pulled into the parking lot at the appointed time, picking us up, and then making several stops at other lodges and guesthouses in Livingstone to gather more visitors before heading out of town toward the resort. This tour, unlike some of the others, does not allow for payment to be charged ...Read More

When booking our reservations in Livingstone, Zambia, we found that accommodations in this town near Victoria Falls generally come in two varieties. There are the luxury resorts located along the Zambezi River, some of which are quite nice, but all of which charge a hefty premium for their amenities and location on the river and near the falls. And then there are the places in town, mostly small, locally owned guesthouses, inns, and lodges that cater to a combination of Zambian tourists, backpackers, and tourists from other parts of Africa, Europe, and North America who are interested in sticking to a budget. Our initial research left us in sticker shock at the prices charged at the luxury resorts on ...Read More
