Story/Tip

We spent a lovely September afternoon cycling from Morecambe to Lancaster and back. The entire route is just over 11 miles and is a great family friendly thing to do.We parked our car on Morecambe Promenade - there were plenty of spaces and it was free to park. We hired bikes from Sunshine Cycle Hire. It is just inside Coopers Amusements on Marine Road West in Morecambe. It cost us £12.00 for half a day, the bikes were in reasonable condition and we got cycle maps.We started off cycling along the Promenade at Morecambe. The town itself is a little tired and run down, but the promenade is lovely. It is very popular with cyclists and you get the most wonderful views across ...Read More

We spent a very pleasant Sunday afternoon at Croxteth Hall - a historical gem in the middle of quite a run-down, urban area of Liverpool. We weren't really sure what to expect before we went, but left captivated by the hall and the grounds.Croxteth Hall was once a huge country estate and home to the Earls of Sefton. The last Earl died in 1972 and Liverpool City Council took over the estate. The hall, gardens and farm are open daily until the end of October, when opening times are reduced during the winter months. We bought a combined ticket for the house, walled garden and farm which cost £7.50 for adults and £5.50 for children. You do not have to pay to park here, ...Read More

Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester

We had bought annual Merlin passes, which cover unlimited entry into their attractions for one year. Legoland Discovery Centre in Manchester is one of these. We visited on a Sunday afternoon on the last day of the school holidays - big mistake. It was so crowded you could hardly move inside. Children were bumping into each other all over the place, and for adults who just wanted to sit while their children played, it was a struggle to find a free seat. We had to stand the whole time. Our son is 9 years old now, I think although he did enjoy it, he is starting to be a bit too old for what they have available here. It is definitely more for the 4-8 age group. The Discovery Ce...Read More

Tatton Park is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. We visited because they had an "Apple Day" with a series of apple themed events going on. They always have a lot of things going on here, but there are acres of beautiful grounds to stroll and enjoy the scenery.Tatton Park is close to the town of Knutsford in Cheshire, but is also conveniently located to the M6 motorway, so it is easy to get to. It is a huge estate, the grounds are enormous and stretch for miles. In addtion you can visit the Old Hall, see lovely landscaped gardens as well as a farm and adventure playground. We drove through the grounds, past the deer to the car park. Entrance is free if you are a National Trust mem...Read More

We last visited Blackpool Tower 3 years ago. It closed after that for a 12 month refurbishment when it was taken over by the Merlin Group. It reopened last autumn, so we decided to visit again.Blackpool Tower bears a resemblance to the Eiffel Tower. You can't miss it - right on the promenade, the highest structure (apart from the Big One rollercoaster). It opened in 1894 and is 518 feet high. It opens every day at 10.00am but closing times vary depending on the time of year. You also need to check the website as the attractions inside all have different opening times too. Ticket prices vary depending on what you want to do - e.g. £12.00 to go to the top, £12.00 to see the circus, or...Read More
