Chiania is the second largest city on the island of Crete and our destination for our holiday. We came on to this city after exploring things to do on the island of Crete and since we rented a car we could almost go forever we wanted to go. Chania is certainly not a small city and has a lot of things to do including lots of restaurants, shops and bars.We were looking for a budget accommodation and came across the hotel Danaos. It’s a two star hotel near the beath and although it doesn’t look that impressive from the outside, it was actually quiet ok. We didn’t really expect a lot but when we arrived we were friendly greeted by the staff and showed to our room. Also the room looked very dat...Read More

During our holiday in Crete we went out for dinner in restaurant Itanos, facing the sea.The restaurant:The restaurant belongs to Itanos hotel. It is, however, completely apart from and it’s along the water. However the food prepared in the kitchen of the hotel and then the waiter brought it across the street to the tables. The terrace is covered, there are quite a few tables, which are therefore not all were full. The tables are covered with blue checkered tablecloths with a white cloth over it. The chairs are a wicker seat, if you've been sitting on a nice pattern in your upper legs. The terrace is situated along a promenade and sea views from your table is very nice....Read More

In Crete we were one week long in an apartment complex in Koutouloufari. Every night we went out to eat somewhere else. Similarly we came to visit Windmill, a friendly looking family restaurant. In Crete it is so touristy that you between noon and evening can’t walk pass restaurants without (annoying) being addressed, with the intention to lure you inside. This restaurant was a lot friendlier. When we were walking along we were kindly spoken to Kalispera, which means good evening. It was said that the restaurant had Greek cuisine. We got a brochure from the restaurant with many translations of Greek words to English. We also got plenty of time to view the menu. We decided that it looked gre...Read More

LocationThe small village of Amoudara is 5.5 km west from Heraklion city center and 9.1 km from the airport. Situated directly on the beach. There is a busy road through Amoudara, but luckily the hotel is a bit more away (about 100 meters from the busy road). You take a steep path up and you reach the hotel. For us it was hard to find. We were obviously in the dark in a strange country but luckily we found it. ParkingParking is free on the sloping road up to the entrance of the hotel or the car park behind the swimming pool. The receptionWe arrived at 01.30 hours at our hotel. The hotel reception is manned 24 hours. The man behind the counter...Read More

Lassithi Plateau

Attraction

South of the city of Malia, high in the mountains, you will find a plateau of about 50 square km and between the mountain Selena and the mountain range Dikti. We drove from Koutouloufari with a rental car. The plateau of LassithiThe platform has a total area of approximately 50 square km. It is a bowl surrounded by mountains. The plateau is famous for its windmills that there were 10,000 to irrigate the fields. The wind turbines are made by Venetian engineers and are 650 years old. Now many of the windmills are broken or rusted and their work are taken over by motor pumps. The landscape looks a bit like a Norman landscape of meadows and fields that are interrupted by fruit tree...Read More
