After our almost 2000 metres of assent the day before, I wasn't going to easily miss out on a night's sleep at our camp site at Azib n' Ououraine. However, I still enjoyed the evening view at the head of the valley which reminded me so much of mid Wales with its rocky stream, valley bottom of rough meadow grazed by sheep and angular rocky mountainside. Mohammed our guide proudly announced that this evenings toileting arrangements were to be "Berber Style", and bless their cotton socks, the guys had dug a hole and arranged a rickety circle of stones around it for our use. Above this was a tall but narrow tent, perhaps 4 foot in circumference and 8 foot high. Janet was the first hardy soul t...Read More

Dealing with altitude - Atlas Mountains

Before we started our Mount Toubkal hike, we were quite nervous about how we might be affected by altitude, and it is only when we were on the mountain did we discover how we were affected and then find coping strategies suitable for us. I'm not going to claim this article offers definitive medical advice; it contains just my observations. However, if you take one message it is that altitude sickness is no joking matter and you shouldn't try to mask the effects it is having on you; this enables your guide can make a reasonable assessment about whether you should come off the mountain for your own safety.Unfortunately hikers can't predict whether they might be affected, and the ...Read More

The climb to Mount Toubkal in Morocco's Atlas Mountains is no light undertaking, although in hiking and mountaineering terms it is a very straightforward peak to attempt. On busy days over 100 hikers will climb Toubkal, and in summertime no special equipment is needed, and almost all will leave will little more than the views from the top seared onto the back of their eyeballs and a few blisters and bruises on their feet. Given the numbers achieving the hike these days, it is strange to think that the first recorded climb to the peak was only 90 years ago in 1923. The main difficulty arises with the sheet height of the mountain; at 13,671 feet (4167 m) high most hikers take a...Read More

On reflection I'm not entirely sure it was a good thing for our guide to explain our following day's route in such detail on a map each evening before. On the one hand, it was very good to know where we were going and when the end of our pain was likely to be. On the other, it made me realise just what an undertaking we had signed up for. By day 3 I was feeling very unfit and a little sorry for myself but chirped up a bit when one of the women in the other groups having climbed Mt Kilimanjaro confirmed that our hiking schedule at Toubkal was far more punishing than that route had been.Anyway, so it was that on our first evening at our Marrakech hotel, our guide Mohammed arrived...Read More

Day 2 of our Mount Toubkal hike experience began much as the previous evening had ended; bathed in bright sunlight. Even though we had gone to bed a little after sundown (at around 8 pm) I hadn't got much sleep in the unfamiliar surroundings.Mohammed had given us the route summary and pep talk and explained that if we got through the day then we would be up for the rest of the hike. Day 2 is the hardest day in his opinion. We were almost immediately into climb mode, and this time we were hiking on a well defined track only one that zigzagged through a boulder field with plenty of hard but easily movable pebbles underfoot. While the way was clear, the going was a little tough; of...Read More
