Boscastle is a really beautiful and very charming little village on the North Cornish coast. It took us about 40 minutes to drive here from our base in Padstow. The roads were narrow - tight country roads and the drive down to Boscastle was very twisty. The views though on the way down of the craggy coastline and the blue ocean are stunning. The only thing I really knew about Boscastle before our visit was that they had a flash flood in August 2004. It was devasting - the river burst its banks and over 400 million gallons of water rushed through the village. It carried away most things in its path - including several trees, a lot of cars and the Tourist Information Centre building. Ma...Read More

Just mention Tintagel and you immediately think of King Arthur, Merlin and that most famous legend. This was supposed to be the birthplace of King Arthur. The castle was actually built several hundred years after the supposed birth of King Arthur, but nobody pays a bit of attention to that! A trip to Tintagel will convince you that King Arthur really existed here. The little village is about 10 minutes drive from Boscastle. We spent the morning in Boscastle and then the afternoon in Tintagel. There is a large car park and plenty of parking in the centre of the village. We had a walk around it, it is said to be the legendary Camelot. All of the shops were cashing in on this fact and w...Read More

Port Isaac Fishing Village

Port Isaac is the most beautiful, unspoilt little fishing village you could possibly imagine. It took us about 20 minutes to drive here from Padstow. It is just what you envisage, when you think of a typical Cornish village. It attracts very large numbers of tourists, especially in the summer months, but it has remained totally unspoilt. It was the setting for two famous UK television series - Poldark in the 1970's and Doc Martin which is still filmed here. I have never watched either of them, but fans of these also make the trip to Port Isaac. We parked right at the top of the village in a car park overlooking the sea. Definitely do not attempt to drive into Port Isaac itself. The ...Read More

The Bedruthan Steps and beach are not far from Padstow, just off the B3276 from Padstow to Newquay. It took us about 15 minutes to drive here from Padstow. We found a car-park signposted for the Bedruthan Steps. It was a bit like a field, but was fine as it was close to the steps. We paid £2.00 to park here - I don't think there was any limit to how long you could stay, the same price applied however long or short amount of time you were there. The views from the cliff top just past the car park are spectacular. The beach has a whole series of giant rocks on it and if you look across from the cliff top it is a particularly impressive sight. There is a legend attach...Read More

I would definitely recommend hiring bikes and cycling along the Camel Trail if you are staying in Padstow or the surrounding area. It is a really lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. We hired bikes from Padstow Cycle Hire, right at the start of the Trail in Padstow. It is at the start of the trail, right next to the harbour and was very good, as well as being convenient. We did not pre-book, and despite it being a hot, summers day in peak season, had no problems getting bikes. They have lots of different types of bikes for hire - everything from mountain bikes to tandems, from tag-alongs to trailers and plenty of children's bikes. Helmets and locks are provided as part of the h...Read More
