Quote: Poland's southeast may be off-the-beaten track for many but it is nonetheless ideal for exploration, being crammed as it is with a wealth of unusual attractions. Having just returned, I have clear memories of intimate cities, quaint wooden churches, stretches of unspoilt parklands and cathedrals full to capacity with believers.

Geographically isolated within the extreme southeast corner of Poland, Przemysl is a town closer to the Polish - Ukrainian border than to any other Polish city of significance. Midway between Rzeszow and Lviv and fifty miles away from each, it is highly influenced by Polish culture and traditions on one hand and Ukrainian lifestyle and customs on the other. This adopted behaviour on the part of the inhabitants of Przemysl is pretty straightforward to comprehend, the city being a spot frequented regularly by Poles from neighbouring Polish towns and villages and at the same time by Ukrainian businessmen coming from cities further east. What is highly surprising is the additional Austrian infl...Read More

An overnight stay in Rzeszow is highly recommended for at least two reasons. Hot summer nights in Rzeszow are tempting occasions for indulgence. In fine weather, Rzeszow’s medieval market square turns into a lively place wrapped in old-world charm and ghostly magic. Mutating into a popular rendezvous among the native population, it is the place to stay if you want to join the melange of locals in an indulgence of music, drinking and entertaining. The atmosphere is neither too noisy nor extravagant but it is unquestionably an authentic experience of the Polish way of life at its best. The language of communication is absolutely Polish and so having the ability to understand some Polish give...Read More

Midway between Krakow and Lviv, Rzeszow is a huge city with a large population located deep within an unspoilt picturesque valley. Sheltered from the south by the Beskid Niski Mountains, it lies in the middle of an extensive well-preserved forested area of pine, oak and beech, this being a favourite haunt for hikers and a Garden of Eden for nature lovers and bird watchers. Originating out of the rugged Carpathian Foothills (the mountain range that forms a natural boundary between southeast Poland and Slovakia), the Wislok River cuts across the city sketching out two distinct zones that cannot be more different. The east zone is a residential suburb, a post-war jungle of Communist-style dre...Read More

In hot weather, Tarnow’s Rynek turns into a charismatic ambience of open-air gastronomic indulgence as swarms of visitors gather together on the market square for a perfect dining experience. To celebrate the hot season’s long hours of twilight, restaurant owners set up clusters of parasols outside in a bid to provide shelter and shade for their convivial guests. After all, dining in such a wonderful atmosphere is usually a rather time-consuming event and so requires protection from the elements. As I walked along the line of monochrome parasols (the whole lot is white, why?) that bordered three sides of the square, I realized that hitting upon an empty table was near to impossible. Aware o...Read More

Tarnow lies only fifty miles east of Krakow. Express trains from Krakow’s Dworzec Glowny reach Tarnow in about one hour, a few of these continue east and cross the border to Ukraine. I took the 8:00 am express in a bid to arrive in Tarnow early so as to have enough time for a full day of sightseeing, intending to depart to Rzeszow further east, late on the same day.The train travelled south through Krakow’s Podgorze district leaving the wonderful panorama of Wawel Hill behind as the latter gradually faded out of view. The train soon took a sharp turn east before it reached the small urban settlement of Nowy Biezanow. From here, it continued further east, the rail tracks routed right along ...Read More
