After our walk to Derwentwater and our play in Hope Park Crazy Golf Course we were getting fairly soaked in the rain and went off in search of shelter and sustenance. We found it in the newly built Cafe Hope, a new place built in the park, with a terrace looking out over the pitch and put golf course. The little cafe sells sandwiches and light bites. My beloved shoes a coffee and Panini, while I opted for a baked potato and pineapple smoothie. There was little hiccup with our order as they had run out of chilli, and they offered to nip to the supermarket to buy some more. That gave me the clue that it was likely to be pre cooked and tinned chilli so I went for the tuna mayonnais...Read More

Attraction | "Keswick obsticle golf at Hope Park"

Wandering past Hope Park between Keswick and the lake, our eyes lit up as we spotted the Obstacle golf, or what we in our younger days we would call Crazy Golf. Perhaps the owners were hoping for a better class of client by describing it as Obstacle Golf. At £3 a person, the golf course was a good excuse for us to wander in the rain getting wet for an hour and to build up an appetite for our lunch. The crazy gold course is in quite a small area with one hole immediately after the other. The course is all concrete made (rather than a mix of concrete and artificial grass) and many of the holes require the player to direct the golf ball through a small hole or tube. The concrete su...Read More

As it was pouring with rain, the little mining museum near the car park suddenly looked all absorbing. In fact, we had an engaging hour in the place (and it was bigger than it looked inside), and the owner Ian proved to be a fountain of knowledge. The experience didn't get off to a good start as a strong voice shouted "Mind the Door!" about 4 or five times as we entered. It turned out that Ian is permanently concerned for visitor's fingers on the strong swing door entrance to the place. Inside is a small bookshop area with a lot of rare books documenting mining conditions, UK geology, the railways (and primarily those to do with mining) and the sale of some original miners lamp...Read More

Restaurant | "Fantastic meal at the Daffodil Hotel"

Daffodil Dining Room at The Daffodil Hotel Photo, Grasmere, England

While our room at the Daffodil hotel had a few niggles, our meal in the hotel restaurant could hardly have been better. Grasmere is an expensive part of the world, and the meal prices at the Daffodil were actually cheaper than most of the places in the centre of the village. As in all the best restaurants, the menu at the Daffodil isn't extensive. I found the restaurant menu fairly traditional as you might expect for this part of provincial England, but its short length boasted its quiet confidence that what it did it did very well. Feel the quality not the length. The staff carefully placed us by the window. When I looked out I could only describe it as "digger view". However,...Read More

Our hotel in Grasmere, the rather bizarrely named (if not for the Wordsworth connection) Daffodil was bought as a Travelzoo deal. While still at over £100 for a night it included breakfast, a full evening meal, a couple of drinks a box of chocolates, and was considerably cheaper than the hotel rack price of over £200 a night. My beloved persuaded me "we were worth it", and in any case she was paying. As we pulled into the large car park on the edge of Grasmere Village and very near Wordsworth's Dove Cottage we discovered it was an imposing building by the lake. While the hotel was very newly refurbished it was surrounded by rubble (although I'm sure this will be something to be worked on)....Read More
