Redworth Hall was the second of the hotels I booked for our trip to the north east of England and I picked up a great deal for a double room including breakfast for two for just £69. I was reassured by the hotel being part of the Barcelo hotel chain since I've never come across a Barcelo that wasn't at least a little bit special although when we arrived – complete with paperwork saying Barcelo – it seems that the hotel is actually owned by a chain called Puma Hotels so I'm still quite confused about how the two are linked. I can only assume that Puma own Barcelo or vice versa. We'd just spent two nights in a tiny little B&B in Robin Hood's Bay on the north Yorkshire coast and had stoppe...Read More

When it comes to planning holidays, my husband leaves it all to me. I research the destinations, pick the hotels and he turns up and does his best to enjoy whatever I've chosen; after all, he can hardly grumble if he's not done any of the hard work. This year I was so busy that I left the planning of our summer holiday too late and about 8 weeks before we were due to go away, I realised I'd blown it. It was too late to get flights and visas to the place I'd originally intended. My husband, recognising that I really didn't have time, struck a deal with me. We would stay in the UK, go to the North East of England for a week and he'd plan everything – all I had to do was book the hotels. I was happy to a...Read More

The museum is enormous and the collection is very varied. It doesn't start and end with the collection of John and Josephine and many newer items have been added to the museum and some whole sections post date the couple. There are some rooms that left me thinking "Surely nobody needs quite that many porcelain birds or crinoline ladies" whilst others made me gasp with envy. There are twenty galleries in total, spread over three floors. Some parts of the museum are permanent collections whilst other rooms host temporary exhibitions. At the time of our visit, the main temporary exhibition was on 'Our Sporting Life' and focused on sporting achievements of local men and women. These included O...Read More

Lumley Castle was another of my bargain hotels for our trip to the north east of England. I found it as a result of a rather vague search for hotels in the Durham area and paid the surprisingly reasonable price of £69 including breakfast. I booked about 3 weeks before we were due to go. Good prices are only available on the less popular nights – typically Sunday and Monday nights are quiet – and our visit was on a Monday. The closest town to Lumley Castle is Chester Le Street, six or seven miles north of Durham. The castle is located close to the Chester Le Street golf course and Durham County Cricket ground, up a long tree-lined driveway. It's a massive, honey-coloured stone building tha...Read More

Restaurant | "Not Quite All the Raaj"

Quote:
Le Raaj is an Indian restaurant which sits beside the A167 dual carriageway not far from Chester Le Street in County Durham. The restaurant is based in a converted chapel building – or possibly it might have been a vicarage. It's hard to tell but there's a distinctly 'churchy' look about the place. We weren't actually looking for a restaurant when we drove past but it was sufficiently eye-catching that we not only spotted it but also remembered the name as we sped past on our way to Lumley Castle where we were staying for the night. We checked in at the hotel and then took a look at the hotel menu and decided we'd much rather go out for a curry so I searched for the restaurant's website and had a look...Read More
