I'm always a little nervous about flying into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport as it is one of the largest airports (actually 17th biggest in the world, and 4th biggest in Europe handling almost 15m passengers each year), and one of the worst for a reputation for losing your baggage. However, my fears are unfounded for many Europeans at least these days, thanks to the drive of many budget airlines to persuade folks to only take hand luggage given their extra baggage charging policy. Exit from Schiphol to the city centre is straightforward via the train. The trains leave from the airport concourse (or rather, below it).Tickets one way to Amsterdam Central Station cost aroun...Read More

Attraction | "Good value canal trip to give a flavour of Amsterdam"

As it was our friend's first time to Amsterdam, she was excited to do the main "tourist" thing and take a trip on the water. We had done it the first time we visited Amsterdam, and as it was a nice afternoon during our visit, thought it would be fun to take to the water once again. There is some choice of cruise and the tours offered by Reederij P Kooij seemed to be the cheapest. We caught our trip for 8 Euros right from near Central Station, and saw a rival company offering their tour for 14 Euros. While the other tour might have been longer, the hour’s trip we enjoyed was long enough.Old man Kooij founded his tour in 1922 by bartering up from an abandoned bicycle and slowly e...Read More

Attraction | "Wilde about good beer"

Another super Central Amsterdam bar is the appropriately named In De Wildman; a place of mixed clientele all with the love of good beer. This is another old building taken over by a bar; this time the original purpose of the venue was a distillery so it has at least had a common purpose for the last few hundred years.Inside, the bar menu is a little confusing for those of us used to ordering in pint glasses. Here most of the drinks are sold in 25cl glasses (slightly less than half a pint). However, considering I felt bloated after a couple of days drinking "euro fizz" (and Amsterdam generally sells truly terrible lager), I was physically salivating at the thought of drinking a ...Read More

My beloved doesn't have the same fixation on food as I, and when she feels hungry she just wants to flop at the nearest reasonably priced restaurant and chow down. As we had just had a couple of beers in the centre of town, this meant she spotted a few of the outdoor table restaurants on Nieuwezijds Kolk, and had plonked herself down in the sun before I could hiss the words "tourist trap" at her.The menu at Mama Maria was a rather strange mix of Argentinean Steak House mixed in with a few other dishes that tourists might like such as chicken and fries. I opted for the Burrito and rice as while I like chips (fries) they don't particularly like me. Our order was taken...Read More

Attraction | "Excellent characterful Jenever Bar in the centre of Amsterdam"

Regrettably my days of enjoying (and being one of) a gang of young Brits getting drunk and stoned whilst staggering around the streets of Amsterdam’s city centre and red light district are some years behind me. While my advancing years and creeping snobbery means that much of my touring and drinking in Amsterdam is these days in and around the more genteel and discrete Jordann area of the city, there are a few city centre haunts that are impossible to miss. One new discovery In de Olofspoort is nestled near the main central train station at Nieuwebrugsteeg 13. We were surprised to find this traditional bar almost overlooked by most of the passersby hunting down the best skunk. I...Read More
