Consider Cleveland

A May 2012 trip to Cleveland by two cruisers

Quote: For years we considered Cleveland to be that long stretch of traffic congestion as we headed to the East Coast. That all changed when our nephew and his wife moved there and enlightened us with this really awesome place. Consider a two or three day stay.

Fortunately we had two good guides and a GPS system to locate the restaurant Latitude 41 N. Their moto is "Where to watch the world go by". It is a good place to gather with friends, make new friends and enjoy some really good food. We arrived on Saturday late morning so could choose between breakfast and lunch entrees. They are located in the Gordon Square Arts District, the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood of Cleveland. That is close to Downtown Cleveland where we were staying. They advertise that they specialize in creative comfort food. That about sums it up. I had an oatmeal patty with fruit compote and fruit on the side with bacon. I was feeling so nutritionally virtuous until I got to the bacon, b...Read More

Our hosts took us by surprise while visiting in Cleveland, Ohio, by treating us to an evening of Southern Cooking. SOHO stands for Southern Hospitality. The cafe partners took the best of Southern Cooking and tweeked it with Midwestern sensibilities and threw in a background in Northwestern style. Can you imagine? Well stop by and try it out you will have a more that satisfying meal. The bar also features innovative coctails and craft beer and wine. For appetizers we shared Green Fried Tomatoes with sweet corn, cheese curd, and okra remoulade. Can't get much more Southern than that and it was very good. Another appetizer on our table was a trendy food Low & Slow Lamb Belly. I admit I...Read More

Attraction | "West Side Wonder"

Our hosts in Cleveland suggested we get up early to visit the local farmers market. Ho-Hum....that sounded less than interesting. But being good little guests we put on our best smiles and agreed. First of all I must tell you that our community has three farmers markets and I visit them once in the Spring for rhubarb and once in the fall for decorative gourds. In Cleveland, the West Side Market is a wonder. It is located indoors in a huge building, about the size of our college armory. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The style of architecture is identified as Byzantine. The walls have decorative tiles a century old and the vendors stalls are showcases not card-ta...Read More

The neighborhood surrounding the famous West Side Market has several interesting specialty stores. I want to mention two that left a lasting impression. We visited Penzey's a retail spice store. Other Penzey's I have visited are in strip malls. This one is located in an architectural jewel, one of many in Cleveland. Our hosts said that times were so hard in Cleveland over the years, that old buildings were not leveled to build new bland versions. These places sat untouched and unoccupied until the current age when repurposing and "green" became the trend. The four of us prowled the aisles, sniffed the samples and discussed the uses of the many unusual spices found here. This is a must...Read More

Loganberry Books

While visiting two other chronic readers in Cleveland, Ohio, we were treated to an awesome experience in Shaker Heights on the east side of Cleveland. Loganberry Books has an Art Deco exterior and an interior that could have been the set for a Harry Potter movie. Very tall stacks of books in a wide range of categories. Not all are new, in fact most are used and with luck you may find that rare edition you have looked for. The four of us wandered the store, rested in comfy wing-back chairs in reading areas complete with well worn Persian rugs. In addition they have cards, stationary, games, and calendars. This independent bookstore was established in 1994, but appears much older and has that settled i...Read More

The Cleveland Museum of Art is a really good bargain. Besides being free addmission it covers a wide range of art history. However, what brought us here was the Rembrant in America show in the Special Exhibit Hall. For that we paid Senior Citizen rate of $12. It was a well planned and staged presentation of the work of the great Rembrant; his own work; his work with his assistants; the assistants and prodigy's work; and the imposters. Very interesting, and can that guy paint lace! Actually our very favorite pieces were two self portraits done many years apart. There was a small gift shop area selling books on Rembrant and some minor objects of reproduced art (read that as refrigerator magn...Read More
