A colleague at work recommended Koconut Grove and spoke of the place with such enthusiasm that I was keen to try it. I had a GroupOn voucher for the place which I’d not got round to using so I rang and booked a table. My husband picked me up from work and we drove into Chester with the sat nav programmed to find the restaurant on City Road in the west of the city. City Road is the road at the back of the railway station which runs north-south and Koconut Grove is on the southern end in a small side branch called Ethos Court. It was a good thing that I’d checked the website to know what the place looked like as it definitely didn’t look like an Indian restaurant. The restaurant has a car par...Read More

My mother has been a member of the Tastecard restaurant discount scheme for a couple of years. She saves a fortune because one of her favourite local restaurants is included in the scheme and she goes there frequently, revelling in the 50% discount she receives on food. For a long time she tried to persuade me to join and eventually last October I gave in and bought a card.I’ve not done so well with my card. In fact I’ve only used it twice, because the coverage of the areas where I life leave a lot to be desired. When my friend Alison emailed to remind me we were long over-due for dinner, I went to the Tastecard site in search of something in southern Cheshire, ideally hoping to find somew...Read More

Indian Brasserie

Restaurant | "A poor choice"

The small Northumberland seaside town of Seahouses doesn't offer too much in the way of culinary excitement. It's a place blessed with a superfluity of fish and chip shops and old-style cafes but in the evenings your choices are very limited. A good portion of fish and chips can be a very traditional delight but it's not the sort of thing you can (or should) eat every day. We had checked out the various dining options after going to the Farne Islands to see the puffins and had identified two Indian restaurants as possible places for dinner. We were staying about 10 miles away, closer to Lindisfarne island and drove back to Seahouses on our second night in the area. There are two Indian rest...Read More

In the last week I’ve had a bit of a curry binge and eaten in four different restaurants. The first three were due to being on holiday but this evening’s was for work. Yes, strange as it sounds, I can eat curry and call it just doing my job. This meal took place on the evening before starting a tour of our factories and I wanted to introduce a new member of my team to someone he’ll need to work closely with. What could be better than a chat over chaat or a natter over a naan?Three of us drove down to Horsham to stay in a local hotel and the person we went to meet picked us up and took us into the town. Despite never having been to Horsham and therefore never to this restaurant, I chose Dar...Read More

Restaurant | "Not Quite All the Raaj"

Quote:
Le Raaj is an Indian restaurant which sits beside the A167 dual carriageway not far from Chester Le Street in County Durham. The restaurant is based in a converted chapel building – or possibly it might have been a vicarage. It's hard to tell but there's a distinctly 'churchy' look about the place. We weren't actually looking for a restaurant when we drove past but it was sufficiently eye-catching that we not only spotted it but also remembered the name as we sped past on our way to Lumley Castle where we were staying for the night. We checked in at the hotel and then took a look at the hotel menu and decided we'd much rather go out for a curry so I searched for the restaurant's website and had a look...Read More
