We decided to visit the Archeologie museum because I am interested in all things concerning history and I thought that a city with as much history as Bruges would have an amazing archaeology museum. Unfortunately I was wrong and it was in comparison with the rest of the city a real disappointment. To be completely fair to the museum it is probably more aimed at children but this isn’t made very clear until you are actually inside the museum and looking around and to be honest I can’t imagine that even children will find much of interest here. The museum is located about 5 minutes from the Market Square and is close to the Church of Our Lady. It’s actually quite difficult to find the museum...Read More

My partner and I recently returned from a few days in Belgium. We decided to visit Bruges as it was somewhere neither of us had ever been and it was easy to get to by using the Eurostar and then a local train from Brussels. While looking for a hotel I was a little shocked with just how expensive the hotels in Bruges actually were and most of them were easily over 200 Euros a night. It was a bit of a struggle to find a decent looking hotel that wasn’t too far from the centre and wasn’t going to cost the earth. I found the Karos hotel that is part of the Floris hotel group and they had rooms that were reasonably priced and weren’t too far away from all the sights.First impre...Read More

Attraction | "Well worth the climb for the views "

Belfry Tower/Belfort of Bruges Photo, Bruges, Belgium

Out of all the sights in Bruge the Belfy is the most prominent thanks in part to its location in the main city square but also because it dominates the Bruge city scape and can be seen from nearly every location in the city. For outstanding views of this beautiful medieval city then a climb to the top of the tower is highly recommended. +++++ A little bit of history +++++The medieval Belfry is the symbol of the city and was originally built in 1240 until a fire destroyed most of the building. It was later rebuilt in 1280 and added to in the 1400’s. The top of the tower was originally wood until it burnt only to be replaced again with a wooden structure until this again wa...Read More

When we visited Bruges in May we were lucky enough to have really good weather and it was sunny and warm most of the time which was a relief as it had been raining non-stop for weeks beforehand (and afterwards for that matter). As a lot of the pleasure in Bruges is getting out and about to explore the city by walking around this meant it was much more enjoyable and relaxing instead of worrying about being wet and cold the whole time. One other benefit of the warm weather was that we could go on a guided boat tour of the city without shivering the whole time as the boats in Bruges are open topped so not really ideal for when the weather is awful. For me personally a boat tour is...Read More

Town Hall (Bruggemuseum Stadhuis)

Attraction | "Gothic splendor at its finest "

Town Hall (Bruggemuseum Stadhuis) Photo, Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a beautiful city and for lovers of history there is something literally on every corner. For architecture buffs the two main squares in the city offer the most impressive buildings and whilst the larger Market Square may have more of them the more intimate Burg Square has in my opinion the more impressive ones. The Stadhuis or Town Hall as it is more commonly known in English is my favourite building in all of Bruges purely from an aesthetic point of view. Built in 1300’s this impressive gothic marvel is a reminder of Bruges bygone Golden Age and has been wonderfully preserved over the years and remains in use as a functional seat of local government to this day. It i...Read More
