Quote: My sisters showed me her Washington and I showed her my California. Sometimes road trips take on theme of their own. While traveling with my sister, we encountered just that. We enjoy the outdoors, all aspects, from the flora and fauna to the types of activities.

When going on your first, hopefully not only, road trip with your sister you'll not only blabber till the cows come home but you will go where you've never gone before, see things you've never seen before and of course, go in a helicopter. My sister was in the process of moving to Seattle when Mt. St. Helen so violently that in addition to the trail of destruction, she blew her top off permanently. While the surrounding area suffered much damage, the flora and fauna are slowing making a come back. What better to what happened while traveling by so many years ago than to see it from the air.Experiencing the belly flop exit from a plane when skydiving, the sharp turns from over...Read More

The main highway that goes directly through Lassen Volcanic National Park had not been completely plowed. It was to be completed for the Fourth of July that was a couple of days away. This meant we had to drive back out from the northern end of the park where we had played around in the snow areas, proceed down the interstate and enter from the southern end.The southern area was vastly different from the north's winter playground. It was springtime here and the ground was moist not dry. Bulb plants were breaking through and young birds were chirping happily, as Mom would bring fresh earthworms for breakfast. We headed off to the dirt path that led to large boiling mud pool. ...Read More

Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge has so much wildlife and so many ways to see them. Starting at the visitor center, we were able to see young owls in a tree just outside the building. One way to know they are young, we were told, is that they stayed out on the limbs and did not maintain close proximity to the base of the tree. The best chance of seeing young owls is to see young ones. That certainly doesn’t appear to be a negative. Walking outside, in the middle of the day with high heat, the youngsters had remained right where they were perched. However, the head turning in the direction of me seemed to let me know I was still being watched.Across the street a field of tall grass ...Read More

Olympic National Park covers an expansive area in the Northwest part of Washington. The Park consists of more than 70 miles of Pacific Coast including cliffs, tide pools and beaches. Inland is home to forests, including a rain forest, mountains, and lakes. We were going to experience a bit of everything. Our plan of attack was to follow highway 101 from the southeast heading north and continue in a large loop. Our first stop was at Brinnon on the coast of Hood Canal. Dosewallips River flows in the canal, which turns out to be a very popular clamming area. The extreme tidal change revealed a sea of clamshells as far as the eye could see. It would have been impossible to walk any dista...Read More

Story/Tip

Downtown Dunsmuir Photo, Dunsmuir, California
Quote:
Dunsmuir is a relative small city that whisks you back in time with faded, old murals and company names on the side of buildings. Front porches with swinging chairs were the norm for neighborhoods and shops lined the main street of the town. Soda fountain-style restaurants beckon for your business. The air was clear and the temperature slightly crisp. This was perfect for the little hikes we were shown by a delightful lady in the visitor's center. With a population of less than 2000, how might a person wind up in Dunsmuir? It is located off Highway 5, south of Mount Shasta and north of Shasta Lake, two very popular tourist destinations. not to mention being on the Pacific Ring of Fire....Read More
