Another live music venue used by the organisers of the Dot to Dot 2012 music festival in Manchester was the Deaf Institute just across the road from Zoo. While we didn't personally see any Dot to Dot bands at the Deaf Institute, I have recently seen Portland band Portugal. The Man play there live and so can describe the experience. The Deaf Institute is a great name for a live rock music venue, but it was not created for this purpose – the building was a former school for the deal dating from 1877. The ornate exterior of the building is worth a moment to stare at, although of course you risk the wrath of the kids trying to get to the bar! It is a great way to keep a lovely old building u...Read More

One of my personal highlight acts of Dot to Dot 2012 was the wonderful American folk of Willy Mason. As he hasn't disappointed on three previous shows I've seen him at, we had to take a tour down to the one of the furthest reaches of the Dot to Dot 2012 venues to the Zoo, a club/music venue deep in the heart of student Manchester to the south of the city. The walk from the central venues (Sound Control and the Ritz) took us about 10 minutes along one of Manchester's arterial routes largely lined with warehouses, business units and car showrooms. Our walk didn't show off Manchester's best side, although to be fair we did spot a tempting place to drop off for a cheap cocktail with the studen...Read More

The Manchester Ritz is one of themed range- bigger music venues in Manchester, with a 1250 capacity ballroom, and space for a further 250 in the balcony upstairs. The Ritz dates back to the 1920s and has an interesting bouncy dance floor meaning you have no option but to move when watching a band here. I found the Ritz to be one of the more plush venues on the Dot to Dot tour, and indeed it was refurbished last year, and has retained much of its 1920s art deco style. The Ritz is currently styled as the HMV Ritz, but as HMV has a severe cash crisis and is engaging in a fire sale of assets, I'm guessing that won't continue for much longer. As one of the larger venues, the Ritz ...Read More

Sound Control venue is just south of Manchester city centre very near the city's "third" train station at Oxford Road. If you don't know the city well beware that not all trains coming into Manchester stop at Oxford Road. The venue is tucked a little down a side street near the railway viaduct, and to be fair the building has seen better days and is little more than a shell of bare brickwork and heating pipes. It used to be a music equipment shop in a previous life. While perhaps older folks become used to seeing live music in a stadium or purpose built venue, with modern well lit bathrooms, I always think these small and rough buildings are what live music is about – it's the ...Read More

Story/Tip

I am fortunate enough to have a well above average income in the UK, but even I balk at the price of attending some music festival tickets these days. So when I spotted a full day's entertainment in nearby Manchester with over 60 bands playing at 5 venues for just £20, I jumped at the chance. Obviously at this kind of price you aren't going to see the real top acts of the moment, but you do get a chance to spot the next up and coming artist a year or two before the masses. The headline acts this year were The Drums, Pulled Apart By Horses, and the wonderful Willy Mason. Previous Dot to Dot festivals have showcased the talents of the likes of Mumford and Sons and Florence and the Machine. ...Read More
