Leo’s Restaurant and Bar

Restaurant | "A Good Night Out"

On my last visit to Bremen I’d offered to take a couple of people who work for me out for dinner and I’d asked them to pick where they wanted to go. Leo’s was the place they chose. I was staying at the InterCity hotel by the railway station and Leo’s is just a couple of blocks away. From the outside it looks like an old church although apparently it’s actually an old police station. I had eaten there once before and not been particularly impressed but I was happy to give it a second go.Inside the look is more ‘bar’ than restaurant and it’s a dimly lit place with a colour scheme of dark red and black. We had pre-booked a table for 7.15 pm but when we turned up they had no record of the rese...Read More

Sakura Sushi Bar

Restaurant | "Quick - grab that one!"

Until a couple of years ago I absolutely adored sushi. I would crave cold rice and raw fish ahead of just about any other type of food. I liked sashimi even more – I just couldn’t get enough of raw fish and seafood. Then after receiving treatment for an illness a couple of years ago I was left not exactly disliking raw fish, but certainly not craving it the way I used to. I lost my sushi mojo – I went from preferring eating the stuff to doing just about anything else, to a feeling of mellow indifference.Back in October I got a new team member at work when we hired an assistant to work with my two colleagues in Germany. I went over to meet her on her second day at work and I’d warned the ot...Read More

Restaurant | "Cheap and Tasty"

If you are looking for an elegant, sophisticated dining experience then you’ll want to give China Express a wide berth. On the other hand if you are looking for a massive portion of steaming hot Chinese or Thai food at a price that will make you think they forgot to charge you for something, then China Express on the Bahnhofplatz in Bremen is a great bet. It is stupidly cheap and the portions are humungous – what’s not to like?My friend Sabine in our Bremen office has just resigned so we wanted to go out and celebrate and gossip. Bremen is under siege at the moment – the annual Freimarkt fair has just taken up residence in the large car park by the exhibition centre and you can hardly move...Read More

Bolero Schlachte Bremen

Restaurant | "I'd give no stars if it were possible"

Quote:
When my colleagues in Bremen booked dinner for a group of 16 of us at Bolero on the Schlachtea, the city's trendy waterfront, a couple of weeks of uninterrupted sunshine meant they were probably quite confident that we'd be able to eat outside. Unfortunately the day before we went the good weather 'broke' and the heavens opened, consigning us to the inevitability of a table inside. We planned to walk to the restaurant so that those members of the party who'd not been to Bremen before could have a look around but when we saw the weather, we threw everyone into taxis and drove to the restaurant. My first impressions were not good at all. Bolero looks more like a dark and gloomy bar than a pr...Read More

Chilli Club

Restaurant | "More Chilli Please"

Quote:
The Chilli Club in Bremen describes its restaurant as an 'Asian Brasserie'. It's located in an area of the city where old river warehouses have been converted into swanky restaurants and modern business offices. It's a very different Bremen from the typical historic touristy centre and quite a change from the places where I usually eat. I went there with a local colleague on Tuesday night, after first trying another restaurant called 'El Mundo' which she rejected on the grounds that "Nobody should have to wait in a queue on a Tuesday night". I didn't mind – I thought the Chilli Club sounded more like my kind of place. The restaurant sits beside the river with a large outdoor terrace but on ...Read More
