Unlike the other places I've described in this journal, Vogt's Bierexpress does not brew its own beer but it is a place I think beer lovers would enjoy, partly because there is a great range of beers to choose from, and because it is a really characterful pub (known in German as a 'Kneipe'), the likes of which are fast disappearing in Berlin. Berlin is well known for it's eclectic bar scene and for some amazing interio design within those bars but I like the old style and Vogt's did not disappoint. This pub, which has been in the same family for decades, is situated in Kreuzberg, just next to the Mehringdamm U-bahn station. Buses also stop close by. The pub is close to area of Bergmanstrass...Read More

There are two branches of this excellent microbrewery and restaurant and we visited the one in Berlin Mitte on a cold Friday evening in December. The beer is brewed on the premises, a couple of arches under the S-bahn track, which makes this a very cosy and unusual setting because of the low arched ceiling. The place is hugely popular with the after work crowd and we saw lots of parties of tourists turned away. As we were only coming to sample the beer and not to drink, we were able to occupy a very small high table. If you do want to eat you'll find a full and varied menu starting with soups which looked to me enough for a lunch with bread, to full meals from the grill including beef, por...Read More

Berlin’s microbreweries come in all shapes and sizes and this one, Brauhaus Mitte is attached to a modern shopping centre close to the Alexanderplatz and the Hackeschermarkt. We visited on a Sunday afternoon when the stores were closed and we entered by way of a staircase at the side of the shopping centre with led us directly into the bar area. There are tables for casual drinkers near the bar, and more comfortable larger tables and lovely upholstered booths round to the left on a slightly elevated level. There are lots of tables, most of which were full on this busy Sunday in December; we had to sit in this section where all of the other tables appeared to be occupied by diners though I’d...Read More

What a dilemma: over one hundred beers and only one lunch-time to drink them in.The ‘Haus der 100 Biere’, or Mommseneck, just off Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, is actually a restaurant but it appears to promote the many beers stocked there ahead of the food it serves. We had seen this restaurant on the first day of our stay in Berlin and we'd been quite excited by the idea of there being so much choice, and especially because there were some exotic beers we’d never tried before and others that we’d tried during our various travels and would have liked to drink again; however, we had decided not to rush in because we preferred instead to try some of the local microbreweries. On our ...Read More

Restaurant | "Wheat Beer at the Potsdamerplatz"

The dazzling Sony Centre on Berlin’s Potsdamerplatz might seem an unlikely place to find a microbrewery. Usually in this part of the world they take the form of beer hall style pubs, places with a traditional ambience, but Lindenbrau is a brew pub for the 21st century even if it sells a beer that has been made for hundreds of years. Banished is the idea of the bearded woolly jumper wearing drinker making notes in an ancient notebook; this modern pub-restaurant has a wide customer base and is hugely popular. I’m not much of a wheat beer drinker and I would usually choose some other beer in preference but we had been in a few brew pubs during our visit to Berlin and a wheat beer was always ...Read More
