The final stop on our Ring of Kerry Tour was billed as "the shopping stop" of the day - Avoca at Moll's Gap. It was a bit disappointing to us, since this was really not in a convenient shopping location as it was the only shop atop the Moll's Gap. Shopping for me should be more about a leisurely walk about town, looking at window displays and going into those shops that look interesting. Here, it was like fishing in a barrel and we were the fish . . . a captive audience in the middle of nowhere. A great view, but still, in the middle of nowhere. For people who take the O'Connor's tour or any other for that matter, do not plan on having this be your one and only shopping point. Also if ...Read More

On our first night in County Galway, we did not have time to do our grocery shopping for the next five or six days, so we decided to stop for supper on our way into our timeshare cottage. Oughterard is the last town beforehand, so it was a convenient stop along the way. We were really impressed with the quality of the food and value received. In looking through the menu, it was challenging to really make a decision. I watched several meals served to see how they looked. We arrived there at around 6:00pm and the place was pretty full so there was a lot of opportunity to see the various meals being delivered. While both the salmon and cheeseburger looked good, we decided on the...Read More

After about 90 minutes of walking in the cold, damp, misty morning air we were all ready for a warm beverage and midday snack. We found Dave's Coffee House about a block from the White Star Line Office and our next stop, so we popped in to see what they had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised that the were not just a coffee house, offering cappuccino but also hot chocolate (or tea) and a full lunch menu. Although it had been more than four hours since we had eaten breakfast at our cottage, nobody really wanted a full meal. I must say, however, their sandwiches and soup/stew offerings looked delicious. The special of the day was a chicken sandwich which had meat spilling over the sides...Read More

When we arrived in Tralee, it was shortly after 5:00p and we'd been busy sightseeing all day. We were looking forward to a relaxing dinner before checking into our hotel. As we arrived in Tralee, we drove past the road that led to Ballyseede Castle Hotel in hopes of finding something for dinner close. Not really seeing anything immediately, we turned to the Garmin for assistance. With Gally's Bar & Restaurant identified as less than two miles away, we all agreed that sounded like a good choice.Pulling up into their parking lot, there were several cars which was a good indication of a popular place. When we entered and asked for a table for three for dinner, they said their restaur...Read More

Once we got checked into our B&B in Malahide, it was time to find supper. I had researched pubs in the seaside harbor village of Malahide and thought Gibneys looked interesting. They are a long-time staple in town, having several food business interests that take up nearly a full block in town. They did not disappoint. This was the first night that I felt like we had eaten bar food and I say that in a good way. After looking through the full menu, David and I both agreed that we didn't really want a big dinner so instead we opted for steak sandwiches. I took mine with the mushrooms only, while he had his with the onions as well as the mushrooms. They used a sirloin steak which was...Read More

Most of the places we dined at have not yet been reviewed here in IgoUgo so imagine my surprise when this off the beaten track restaurant actually auto-filled in my review form as I started typing in letters. For our first evening in Ireland it was just David and me since his mom missed the connection in Chicago/O'Hare and would be arriving the following day. While we had planned to do shopping and then cook in our self-catering cottage, we felt we should wait for her to arrive to make sure we had all the right food items in the house. That left us with no supper plan so we asked our host Richard for suggestions. Horse and Hound Restaurant was his advice. Even our Garmin "Toots" knew ab...Read More

Our last meal in Ireland was at Nancy Hands Bar & Restaurant in Dublin. Selected due to its very convenient location on the Dublin City Hop-On Hop-Off bus route (stop #18), we scheduled our day's sightseeing so as to end up here at the end of the day for dinner and enough time to catch the last HoHo bus of the day back to the bus station. It worked out perfectly! When we arrived they had the Chelsea/Liverpool FA Cup game on every TV in the place. There were several fans watching the last half but not so many as it was too loud or rowdy for a nice quiet supper. Besides, we were in a pub, how quiet should we expect it to be on an early Saturday evening? At this final junctu...Read More

During our Galway Tour Company tour to the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin and Gus O'Connor's Pub was pretty much on the way making this a good choice to stop for lunch. Our small group of 14 arrived at what seemed to be just before mad rush of tourists even though it was after 1:00pm when we arrived. With 45 minutes to order and get our meals, I was skeptical . . . but it all worked out great as they have it down to a science. We even had some time to walk a few doors away to buy some homemade fudge!Inside, we were instructed to order and pay at one of the two bars inside. We first grabbed a table and menu, then went back up to place our orders. It was late enough in the day that we were all...Read More

The Scarriff Inn is actually a B&B lodge whose pub/restaurant is utilized by many of the bus companies that operate Ring of Kerry tours. It is a quaint little place with several rooms including a bar and more formal restaurant. The area where we were taken had a beautiful view overlooking the bay. Billed as the "best view in Ireland" I think is a bit of a stretch but who am I to question their marketing? If I had to guess, I'd say this is probably where they serve their B&B guests their morning meal. When we entered, we went through the small gift shop to a hot steam table set up. There were several offerings including stew, hot vegetables and mashed potatoes. We were not hung...Read More
