The Pick of Halifax's Pubs

With no less than three beer festivals taking place over the same May weekend, we couldn’t have chosen a better time to visit Halifax. While one of the festivals was taking place in the Square Chapel, the other two were held in pubs and they were ones we might not have visited had we not know about the events taking place. We saw the poster advertising the Three Pigeons’s beer festival when we were in the tourist information office and we asked the assistant there to mark it on the map for us. She told us that this one was a lovely pub with wonderful art deco elements in the décor. She wasn’t the only person to tell us this; one man, who I’d have thought would have no interest in such thin...Read More

Halifax is not short of pubs but one name that kept cropping up was the Three Pigeons; as it happened this particular pub was staging a beer festival over the weekend we were in the town so we really had no excuse not to visit. The pub is situated on the very edge of the town centre on South Parade which is the way out of town towards the stadium. It doesn’t have a garden as such but it does have a couple of picnic style tables and benches on the concrete in front of the pub. The road that runs in front of the pub can be busy during the day but by early evening the traffic had eased off and, had we been able to get a seat, we’d certainly have sat outside. The Three Pigeons is...Read More

"Halifax? For a weekend break? Why?" We were asked this several times over our two days in the town. Maybe it’s harder to appreciate the charms of a place if you live there day in, day out. I’d passed through Halifax on the train on several occasions and even made a ten minute stop once to deliver something by car but I’d often fancied stopping to take a look. The setting is dramatic; the hills make a pleasing backdrop which contrasts brilliantly with the old industrial buildings; the only example I can think of in the UK that comes close to this for the combination of industrial heritage and countryside is in our network of canals, especially in Cheshire and Staffordshire. If you’re inte...Read More

It was Halifax’s Victorian era civic buildings I most interested in seeing during my visit to the town but it was a building that was completely new to me, and from a different era, that really caught my attention. The Piece Hall is a Georgian building, and the sole remaining example of its kind in England. It was built in 1779 as a rather grand market place for cloth merchants to display and sell their wares, a ‘piece’ being the name given to a 30 yard length of woollen cloth made on a handloom. Halifax was at the heart of the West Riding cloth making industry and the successful businessmen of the town wished to have a market place that reflected their standing. At this time cloth manufac...Read More

Although local opinion was divided as to which of Halifax’s Indian restaurants is the best, Masters Ruchee got one of the strongest recommendations and so we rolled up around 8.30pm on a Saturday night in search of a good dinner. We hadn’t booked but the restaurant was quiet and we were given a window table which allowed us to watch the comings and goings on the street. Ruchee is a rather traditional ‘curry house’ style restaurant in terms of décor but it is clean and comfortable and, with the lights dimmed, rather cosy; some guests at another table kept muttering about the cold and kept their coats on but we were fine. We’d been advised that the menu comprised only specials an...Read More

Halifax might not be an obvious choice for a weekend break but, then, Himself and I are hardly your average tourists. We like to think that we are within grasping distance of our permanent move to Slovenia and, aware that there are some parts of our own country we don’t know that well, we’ve been trying over the last year or so to fill in some of the gaps before we leave. I wanted to see Halifax because I love Victorian architecture; being a city that had its heyday in the Victorian era, Halifax is crammed with wonderful civic and industrial buildings, many of which have been given a new lease of life in recent years. The Dean Clough Mills are just one example of how Halifax’s industrial h...Read More
