Having been in Ireland nearly a week, a guided motor coach tour seemed to be a good idea to let David have a break from the driving on the opposite of the road. I booked the Ring of Kerry tour with O'Connor Auto Tours largely for that reason. The added bonus of doing such was that we got to learn first hand about some of Ireland from the local guiding (and driving) the tour coach. Our day started by driving to Killarney from Tralee, about a 30 minute ride. We arrived in plenty of time to take care of the details before our trip. We arrived especially early so that we could have our choice of seats in the bus, which proved to be very fortuitous. We were in the first two rows which provi...Read More

Brendan Ferris is the owner of Kell Sheep Centre and was our host during the 45 minute educational orientation and demonstration on raising and herding sheep. When we first arrived we were invited to stand around a pen that contained several varieties of sheep. I had no idea there were so many! Some are raised for their wool, others for their special wool used in Aran sweaters . . . many are raised for food (lamb chops or stew). The strangest sheep that he had was the Jacob Sheep, one with four horns! What a weird looking animal he was. When I got home I had to look them up to learn more about them.Considered to be rare, they are often used for protection as guard animals. I suppose...Read More

The Kerry Bog Village Museum was one of the two optional tours during our Ring of Kerry tour with O'Connor Auto Tours. We were provided roughly 45 minutes to explore the village, or if preferred, skip the village and visit at the adjacent Red Fox Inn for an old fashioned Irish Coffee or perhaps a scone and tea. There are four thatch roof houses plus a couple of other buildings that make up the village. One of the houses was actually taken from elsewhere in County Kerry and then reassembled here. The others were built as exact reproductions of real houses found in this area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Most all furnishings are antiques original to that period. Life-size...Read More

The Scarriff Inn is actually a B&B lodge whose pub/restaurant is utilized by many of the bus companies that operate Ring of Kerry tours. It is a quaint little place with several rooms including a bar and more formal restaurant. The area where we were taken had a beautiful view overlooking the bay. Billed as the "best view in Ireland" I think is a bit of a stretch but who am I to question their marketing? If I had to guess, I'd say this is probably where they serve their B&B guests their morning meal. When we entered, we went through the small gift shop to a hot steam table set up. There were several offerings including stew, hot vegetables and mashed potatoes. We were not hung...Read More

The final stop on our Ring of Kerry Tour was billed as "the shopping stop" of the day - Avoca at Moll's Gap. It was a bit disappointing to us, since this was really not in a convenient shopping location as it was the only shop atop the Moll's Gap. Shopping for me should be more about a leisurely walk about town, looking at window displays and going into those shops that look interesting. Here, it was like fishing in a barrel and we were the fish . . . a captive audience in the middle of nowhere. A great view, but still, in the middle of nowhere. For people who take the O'Connor's tour or any other for that matter, do not plan on having this be your one and only shopping point. Also if ...Read More
