An April 2012 trip to County Galway by MilwVon

Quote: Our timeshare in Recess (County Galway) served as a perfect base to explore the western region of Ireland for six days. It was also from here that we went to the Aran Islands/Inis Mor (see separate journal).

On our first night in County Galway, we did not have time to do our grocery shopping for the next five or six days, so we decided to stop for supper on our way into our timeshare cottage. Oughterard is the last town beforehand, so it was a convenient stop along the way. We were really impressed with the quality of the food and value received. In looking through the menu, it was challenging to really make a decision. I watched several meals served to see how they looked. We arrived there at around 6:00pm and the place was pretty full so there was a lot of opportunity to see the various meals being delivered. While both the salmon and cheeseburger looked good, we decided on the...Read More

We had one day planned to drive what some refer to as the Connemara Loop. Cong is on that route and would be our first destination after leaving the cottage in Recess.Cong is actually in County Mayo, just over the county line from County Galway. Perhaps it's greatest claim to fame is that the John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara film classic "The Quiet Man" was largely filmed here. Today there is a replica of the cottage used in the filming, which serves as a museum for visitors to see a part of movie history. There are also several "Quiet Man" tours available that include not only this cottage/museum, but also visits to other local points of interest used in the filming of the movie. Since...Read More

Attraction | "Thoroughly Enjoyed Our Day with Declan"

Wanting to give David a break in the driving, we scheduled two day tours with motor coach companies. After some research, Galway Tour Company (GTC) of Galway City was the one we chose to go with for a tour of the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren. We could not have been more pleased with the experience. With a scheduled pick up time of 9:30am, we had to leave our cottage in Recess by 8:30am just in case we ran into city traffic in or around Galway. Of course, getting lost thanks to "Toots" our Garmin GPS was also a possibility. She got us to the meeting point of Salthill Hotel where we would park the car for the day without incident so we were actually a little early, but that was OK. We ...Read More

Attraction | "Picturesque Castle Turned Abbey in the Connemara Mountains"

Perhaps one of the most recognizable photographs from the Connemara region is the Kylemore Abbey. It has old world charm and a storied past to go with it. Today it is the home to the community of Benedictine Nuns who bought the house and grounds back in 1920. Life here today is much different than what the original family living here experienced back in the late 1800's.Kylemore was built in 1867 by business tycoon and politician Mitchell Henry for his wife Margaret. The castle and gardens were a romantic gift to her after they honeymooned in this area in 1850. Unfortunately she died in 1874 at the young age of 45, leaving a heartbroken and distraught Mitchell and nine children behind...Read More

Hotel | "Exchanged My Timeshare 4 Self-Catering Cottage"

Connemara Country Cottages Photo, County Galway, Ireland
Quote:
Connemara Country Cottages is a cluster of six thatch roof self-catering cottages that are mostly owned as timeshares. In addition to being available through a timeshare network exchange such as RCI, they are available as rentals either directly through their management company or a booking agency. I do not know if there is any difference as to which units are timeshares and which are available as open rentals, but will say that it would appear that there may be a difference based on other reviews posted elsewhere on the internet. While I was concerned going into this having read some rather harsh reviews, I can say that our stay was very good and did not reflect the nature of the negativ...Read More
