I had passed through Brezice several times on the train to and from Zagreb but what I saw in photographs didn’t match what I remembered. I thought perhaps I was mistaken. The pictures of a handsome red-roofed town with a solid Renaissance castle at one end of the main street were tempting and a trip was planned. After a night in Zagreb we crossed the border into Slovenia and stepped off the train at the sleepy station at Brezice. The station building backs onto a leafy little square around which half a dozen pretty houses are clustered but this is not Brezice proper; that’s a couple of kilometres away from the line and fortunately for us the bus was waiting to take train passengers into town. ...Read More

Restaurant | "A Mock Baroque Dining Hall"

If you think you would enjoy eating your dinner under the gaze of the subjects of garish mock Baroque era portraits there is, believe it or not, a place just for you. I can’t say I’d ever harboured such a desire but when I saw some photographs of Santa Lucija Gostilna and Pizzeria in Brezice I knew instantly I had to eat there. We didn’t have a lot of choice if I’m honest; I’d really wanted to go to Debeluh which has the reputation of being one of the best restaurants in the country but we weren’t feeling particularly extravagant and a meal there does not come cheap – we’ll save it for a special occasion and push the boat out. The other town centre option was the restaurant of the Rafters Hotel which ...Read More

Brezice’s history can be traced back to medieval times and the historic town centre boasts numerous old buildings including a splendid Renaissance Castle, the most prominent and distinctive building in the town was actually not built until 1914. The water tower dominates the town skyline and can be seen for kilometres all around. It is 46 metres high and comprises a 46 metre pink tower topped with an octagonal reservoir and a very Germanic looking conical roof. Looking at aerial shots of Brezice, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is another of the town’s ancient buildings but closer inspection proves that it’s not as old as it looks. The tower was built at the same t...Read More

Quote:
Brezice’s castle, handsome as it is, is upstaged by the (very) close by Bizeljsko Castle. As you come from the train or bus stations in Brezice the castle is at the opposite end of the slightly curved main street and you can’t see it until you’re almost there. You can see it if you are coming from Catez in the other direction but you only get occasional glimpses of the towers through the trees because this castle does not stand on higher ground as most defensive castles do (this is known as a flat defensive fortress). The castle is home to the regional museum collection which charts the history of the area, focussing on archaeology, ethnology and the local industries and traditions ...Read More

This hostel is known as MC-Brezice, the initials standing for ‘mladinski center’, which translates as ‘youth centre’. Most Slovenian towns of any reasonable size have a ‘mladinski center’ and facilities vary. Brezice’s is brand new and comprises a hostel with dorms and private rooms (some but not all en suite), a concert/film venue and a large café-bar with terrace. The whole complex stands just inside the entrance of the town park, opposite Brezice’s splendid castle. In spite of being a very picturesque town that should attract tourists, the tourist information centre on the main street closed down and visitors are now directed to the one at Catez (a nearby village which has outgrown its boundaries w...Read More
