El Vell Sarria

Restaurant | "Rice? Not so Nice"

My colleague Soledad can always be depended upon to know lots of good restaurants, often ones that are well off the tourist radar screen. I was visiting our Barcelona office to interview candidates for a job and Sole invited me and another colleague for dinner. He couldn't make it – well it was a silly thing to even have asked him since Barcelona were playing Madrid that night and Eduardo had his priorities firmly set on the football. Sole picked me up from my hotel at quarter to nine and we headed to the restaurant. I don't really like eating quite so late but in Barcelona the restaurants have barely switched their ovens on if you go any earlier.El Vell Sarria is located in the Sarria dis...Read More

On a recent business trip to Barcelona, two Portuguese colleagues who were also visiting asked if I’d like to join them for dinner and I was more than happy to say yes. I’ve eaten far too many hotel restaurant meals recently and I was keen to get out and eat proper food. They picked ‘Elj Apo Nes’ on Passaje de la Concepcio, just off the Passeig de Gracia, and a stone’s throw from Gaudi’s famous building, La Padrera. Passaje de la Concepcio runs between Passeig de Gracia and the upper reaches of Las Ramblas and has a lot of restaurants. I hadn’t been to this one before, but I know its upstairs neighbour, Tragaluz, quite well. Elj Apo Nes (hencefort EAN) is part of Grupo Tragaluz, a re...Read More

Restaurante Vivanda

I have a tough job that involves a lot of travel but it’s not all miserable hard work. I do get to eat in some lovely restaurants and my most recent good dining experience was at Vivanda in a district of Barcelona called Sarria. I’ve previously written about another restaurant in that old town which is now swallowed up by the growth of the big city – you can probably find it listed here as Vel Sarria. Vivanda blew Vel Sarria not only out of the water but over the other side of the nearby mountains. This is not a restaurant with a particularly beautiful setting, the service is understated, the booking process almost unfriendly and it’s not shockingly expensive. What it serves is food ...Read More

Restaurant | "Marvellous Merendero"

The first warm weather of the year can bring out the worst in us Northern Europeans. At the first sign of sun we’re flashing too much flesh, polishing off the rusty barbeque and looking for places where we can eat outside, never mind the noise, the insects or the fact that it’s actually not that warm. I pondered on this behaviour this week when I found myself in Barcelona with some colleagues, all determined to eat outside ‘just because we can’ at a restaurant called Merendero De La Mari.We were a group of four – two Germans, two Brits – although we should have been more. The Portuguese and Spanish colleagues had made their excuses because it was St George’s Day (St Jordi) and they h...Read More

Cerveceria Catalana

I got a new colleague for my team at the beginning of March and went over to our office in Barcelona to get involved with her induction. I asked her to choose a restaurant and she picked the Cerveseria Catalana (or the Catalan ‘beer house’ if you prefer). She told me roughly where it was and my memory antennae were twitching. I told her I knew a Cerveseria a couple of blocks off the Diagonal, close to Las Ramblas and she said it was unlikely to be the same one, and that there were lots of such places. I remained optimistic as I had very good memories of a place where I used to eat with colleagues a few employers ago and which had long been a favourite of mine. I think Isabel was absolutely shocked whe...Read More
