After a nights camping at How Stean Gorge in a tipi and a greasy bacon sandwich to line our stomachs our motley crew of 9 set off on our easy Sunday walk. We decided to stick to a short distance of only 5 miles because we had some members of our gang who are not big walkers, so we didn't want any grumpy friends. This walk is a circular route that takes you from The Black Swan in Fearby all the way round past a Druids Temple and back up to The Black Swan. We joined it nearer to our campsite and bascially just had to follow a track, going over several stiles and through some gates and even a farm. You don't need an ordinance survey map or any great map reading skills, in fact if you head to The Black Sw...Read More

Not far away from our campsite and tipis is the small village/hamlet of Fearby. When we left the campsite for our post bacon sandwich walk in the Yorkshire Dales we decided to do a circular route that ended in Fearby because we had noticed this lovely looking pub when driving from Masham. The building that the pub is in was built in the 17th century and attached is a campsite, which I think would be perfect if you had children with you. If camping isn't your style then you could always stay in one of the rooms above the pub. The view from the bar (and apparantly the view from most of the bedrooms) overlooks what is known as the Burn Valley and you can see for miles and miles around the Yorkshire Dales...Read More

Trying to find a reasonably priced hotel that can house 9 people in the Yorkshire Dales over the Easter weekend is almost impossible. Yes there are plenty of bed and breakfasts, but there don't seem to be any that can house 9 people. My friends and I were getting quite desperate, when we came upon a website advertising How Stean Gorge campsite. At first we thought this was just an average run of the mill campsite, which would have done us (begrudgingly), with sites costing just £6 per person per night. However, what we had failed to notice at first was that this campsite offers camping with a difference....you can stay in a tipi!Well having never stayed in a tipi before we were all quite e...Read More

So following our tour of the brewery, it didn't take too much for our group to be persuaded to eat in the attached bistro. The seating areas are near to the brewery's bar, and you can see through into parts of the brewery, which makes for a unique dining experience. Our group was rather large, there were 9 adults, but the bistro managed to fit us in without much difficulty. The staff are extremely friendly and on hand to give you recommendations about the beers and the food. The menu is extensive enough to give you plenty of choice, without being overwhelming. All of the food is sourced locally and most of the dishes have a beer flavoured twist. For my starter I had deep fried brie in Blac...Read More

Attraction | "Cracking beer in stunning surroundings!"

Beer in the UK is important, traditionally we didn't drink lagers and light, carbonated beers. Here in Yorkshire we drink heavy, thick ales, stouts and 'proper' beers. Unfortunately over the years many of these traditional breweries have been bought out by huge corporations. While this has meant that many brands have been able to survive, it does mean some of the regionality has been lost. Enter the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, North Yorkshire. A relatively new brewery, established in 1992 opened by someone with a strong brewing pedigree, Paul Theakston, the Black Sheep Brewery has quicly become popular with locals and visitors alike.Luckily for us the brewery opens it's doors to tours t...Read More
