A travel journal to England by TianjinPaul

As I have lived and worked around the world and because I fly quite a bit for work, I see my fair share of airports. Generally, these tend to be rather soulless and uninspiring places. For example, I fly often to Paris Orly in France and Manchester in the UK, both of which are nothing other than grey and depressing - although the duty free shopping at Orly is excellent. I had similar thoughts about Shanghai Hongqiao (one of the busiest places I have ever been) and Istanbul Ataturk. I was mildly cheered by the architecture of Beijing's new third terminal (The work of Norman Foster), which looks like a dragon. But, I was hugely disappointed by the rather tame interior.I have been cheered rec...Read More

I come from South Yorkshire in the north of England. This is, traditionally, a heavily industrial area. However, in recent years, with the closure of much of the steel and coal industries, the area has fallen into a state of seemingly permanent decline. The high levels of unemployment - or the switch from industrial jobs in the service industry with lower salaries - are probably the most telling sign of this economic slump. There are, though, also several scars visible upon the towns of the regions. My hometown of Rotherham is a clear example of this. The town centre is a shadow of its former self. Where it used to be busy and bustling was full of major high-street stores and thriving small...Read More

My travelling experiences have taken me all over the globe. Currently, I find myself earning a crust in the rather pleasant confines of Nice on the Cote d'Azur. However, for the best part of six years, I lived in Asia. I started off in Mongolia before spending a year in Korea and then four years in China. As a result, I am quite the expert on far-eastern cuisine. Therefore, when I headed home to the UK to visit friends and family, my mother suggested we take a trip to Rice.Rice is located in the Meadowhall Shopping Centre amongst a ring of restaurants on the floor above the food court. It serves a variety of different Asian dishes - this is why my mother thought that I would probably like ...Read More

I live in Nice in the South of France. Therefore, as you might expect, there are lots of places for me to eat fantastic food. There is a wonderful selection of both French and Italian cuisine readily available. On almost every corner. Originally, I come from the North of England. Not an area renowned as a gastronomic paradise. However, as strange as it may seem, I regularly find myself tiring of haute cuisine and pining for some good honest English grub. Therefore, when I go home to visit, one of my first stops is always to a pub.Ordinarily, when in my hometown of Rotherham, I opt for the Blue Coat, a modern pub that is part of the JD Weatherspoons chain and is housed in an old cottage on ...Read More

Ordinarily, when I fly home from the South of France to the North of England, I do so on the budget airline Jet2, which operates from Nice to Manchester. However, as it caters primarily for British holidaymakers, it only operates during the summer months. It service ends in October and begins again in April. So, when I decided to fly home at Christmas, I needed an alternative option. As it is a regular occurrence at Christmas for Heathrow to be gridlocked and passengers to be left stranded (in 2008 and 2009 I endured lengthy delays during the festive period), I decided it would be best to avoid taking BA to Manchester as I would have to transfer there and risk being stranded. So, the only realistic o...Read More

For the record, I am no great fan of early morning flights. I have had to endure them once or twice for work in France, but, thankfully, my apartment in Nice is barely 2km from the airport. Unfortunately, when I flew back to Nice from Liverpool John Lennon airport after spending Christmas at home, the only flight available departed at 7am. As I live nearly two hours from Liverpool, I had no choice but to find somewhere to stay the night before my flight.Actually finding somewhere was a frustrating process. I tried several booking sites and the same selection on all them. However, I was astonished to find that almost all of the hotels listed for the airport were not actually that close. For...Read More
