Istanbul Meze and Grill House

Restaurant | "Excellent cheap Turkish Restaurant"

The weekend before pay day is usually something of a meagre affair, and this last weekend we pooled our remaining funds together to realise we had enough between us to try out an intriguing newish restaurant in the centre of Huddersfield, Istanbul. The Istanbul Restaurant is housed in a former solicitor's office just off the town centre St Georges Square. I was surprised at the location because of the small size of the place; there is probably only about half a dozen tables to be had. As a result, service is quick and as the place is unlicensed it is probably expected that most diners simply eat their meal and move on. We did see a party lingering over a bottle or two of wine that they had ...Read More

Huddersfield Carnival

Story/Tip

Quote:
July is festival month in Huddersfield, and the biggest and best attraction is the Huddersfield Caribbean carnival. There are two days to the Carnival; the first night seems to be an excuse for local people to get drunk and throw paint and powder over each other, as the J'ouvert requires. To be honest, there is a little too much rum and testosterone on the streets in the early hours of the morning for my liking, and it’s an event I always miss. The following day is the more user friendly street parade and party. 2012 saw the 28th street procession, and in time honoured tradition it finally arrived in the town centre over an hour late. Around 30,000 people turn up for the Carnival so ...Read More

Colne Valley Circular

One of our favourite local walks for sheer variety is the 13 miles of Colne Valley Circular. The route begins in the village of Golcar just outside Huddersfield and snakes around the valley sides of the Colne Valley. As the name suggests, you return to Golcar if you carry on for long enough. Allow 6 hours or so to complete the walk with a pit stop for lunch somewhere. I particularly like the trail through historic village (Golcar is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086), rolling field, moorland, gritty mill town and canal towpath walking. The nice thing about this area is that although the walking is quite hilly, the slopes don't last forever; nothing is too much more than a ...Read More

Gringo's Mexican Restaurant

Restaurant | "A mixed bag at Gringos"

As we were off for a concert in Huddersfield, we decided upon an early dinner in the centre of town and scoured the rain drenched streets for a two for one early bird bargain. Our search took us towards the edge of town and the parade of restaurants and bars tucked under the arches of the train line on Viaduct Street, where we remembered Gringos the Mexican Restaurant. As I know the place has been open quite a few years now, and usually looked busy, we decided to take our early bird pound in that direction. The restaurant is one large room, brightly coloured and furnished in purple and orange; the brightly coloured chunky furniture reminded me of the dining hall of my primary sch...Read More

Scape House Inn

Restaurant | "Nice country pub on the edge of Huddersfield"

Unfortunately the UK has seen quite a cull of the traditional pub over recent years, with the rise in drink prices and the availability of vastly cheaper options in the supermarkets. The Scape House Inn was one of the most notable victims in the Huddersfield area, and I was delighted to hear that the place had recently reopened. The Scape House Inn is located in one of Huddersfield's prettier areas, Scapegoat Hill, and makes for a good place to stop during or after a hike of the area. We visited for a beer one spring Sunday afternoon and found the place fairly busy with the smell of very good cooking in our noses. For ale, the pub serves one of my favourites, the Lake District'...Read More
