There is something tranquil about walking on a beach. Maybe it is the pristine sand oozing through your toes; or maybe it is running up and down the sand dunes that have been growing for centuries along the shoreline. Perhaps it is the wind blowing off the water or maybe it is the sound of the waves lapping onto the shore. Truly it is all of the above and for a first time visitor, you might think your were on the coast peering across thousands of miles of a vast ocean. But no, you are standing on the shore of Door County Wisconsin, peering into Lake Michigan. Whitefish Dunes State Park, one of five state parks in Door County, is home to a long line of tall wooded dunes that hug...Read More

I knew the moment I walked into the Door County Coffee & Tea Co. in the small community of Carlsville, Wisconsin, that I could never again be satisfied with just any cup of coffee. The incredible aroma was the first thing that was noticed, then a warm welcome from several of the employees, inviting us in. Many, many years ago, Vicky Wilson and her husband, Doug, visited Door County from their home in Green Bay, and fell in love with the peaceful lifestyle and friendly people there. After reading an article about roasting coffee, an idea and a very successful business were born. She thought to herself, "I love coffee and I love Door County, what could be better." After doing some resea...Read More

In the quaint town of Ephraim in Door County, Wisconsin, we found Joe Jo’s Pizza and Gelato. We usually by-pass the big chain pizza places, finding that their pizza usually all tastes the same. Joe Jo’s is very different. Dick and Kathy Jo Luther are the hand’s-on Owners of this establishment and have developed some of the best pizza we have ever eaten. We started our meal with a wonderfully fresh salad. Kathy Jo oversees the perfect blending of several olive oils from a local company named Oilerie to create their Italian House Dressing. Only thin crust, made from scratch, is offered with all of the usual toppings, such as sausage, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, green and black olives and ...Read More

The Ridges Sanctuary, off Highway 57 north of Bailey’s Harbor, is a fascinating place to explore at any time of the year. It was established in 1937 and encompasses 1,600 acres, including 30 acres of rare boreal (sub-artic) forest. Part of what makes the Ridges Sanctuary unique is that it is the oldest member-based nature preserve in the United States. It was founded by four conservationists who recognized the importance of this area and is supported 100% by donations from citizens and businesses. The mission of the Ridges Sanctuary is "to preserve and protect ecologically significant natural areas and to provide environmental education and research opportunities." The Sanctuary has adopte...Read More

Quote:
While the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek offers highly rated accommodations and is an awarding winning restaurant, it is probably most famous for its Fish Boil, dating back to 1959.A fish boil is exactly what it implies. It is an old tradition through the region dating back to the 1800s and the Scandinavian Settlers of the area. It is a simple process that has been perfected over the years by the White Gull Master Boilers. It begins with an outdoor fire, built several hours before the Boil begins. Thirty minutes before the actual "boil over," the Master Boiler places small red potatoes in a stainless steel tray and then into a large pot of boiling water. He adds half the required salt (one ...Read More

Quote:
The Hands On Art Studio was the brainchild of Cy Turnbladh and his wife, Ohm. It all started with Cy, who had a pottery gallery in the area and wanted to share his enthusiasm for hands-on art with others. Cy purchased a large farm in 1996 and began renovating the existing buildings that had been abandoned long ago. His vision grew and grew and today it is a large complex of studios, each centered on particular mediums. There is one for ceramics and mosaics, one for fused glass, another for metal and one for jewelry. And, of course, there is a pottery studio. One interesting landmark on the property is the old silo standing approximately 30 feet tall. Ohm told me that Cy’s mother lived wi...Read More
