Often when we describe what we’ve been up to, Slovene friends turn their noses up at some of the places we’ve visited. Himself and I are optimistic travellers, quite happy to jump on the first bus and see where it takes us; even if there’s nothing in that town or village, there’s always somewhere to go walking nearby: a hill to climb, a river bank to stroll along, some woods. Sentilj is right up on the border with Austria, a twenty minute bus ride from Maribor. There’s a train station to but there are only a few services a day. We took the bus to Sentilj and the train back. The train ride is particularly nice as the train stops at a few tiny stations that the fast train to and from Graz n...Read More

Although we had cycled past Zupanic a couple of times, we had no idea that we were missing a microbrewery. Fortunately one of the staff in the Maribor tourist information office dredged up the name from the depths of her memory and before long we were on our way. Zupanic is in the suburb of Pobrezje, about ten minutes drive from the centre of town; there is a small amount of car-parking space outside but if it’s full you should be able to park close by. Take bus number 3 or number 12 (it’s a circular bus so both numbers will get you there but the number 3 is quicker from the centre), there’s a bus stop close to the pub. The building is largely obscured by a thick privet hedge t...Read More

Pivnica Kratochwill

Attraction | "Kratochwill Pivnica"

A pivnica is the Slovene equivalent of a pub, and this place gives the thirsty drinkers of Ljubljana a rest from Union or Lasko, which you get everywhere else. You see, Kratchwill is not just bar - it has its own microbrewery where they make their own beer. This tipple is not bad, but I can only drink one or two. However, I'm a girl, so that's no surprise. Actually, male friends agree that Kratochwill is pretty strong. You can ONLY buy their own brew, but you can get soft drinks and spirits. Their pizzas are pretty good, although it's best to ask for one without garlic. Although I love garlic, they have tendency to spoon on a raw garlic/parsley mixture that remains unco...Read More

Attraction | "Pivnica Zoro - a Beer Lover's Paradise!"

The curiously named (for I haven’t been able to find any explanation for it) Pivnica Zoro is located in the centre of Velenje, in the main shopping area. Find the "Mlekomat" (a vending machine for milk), and Pivnica Zorro is off to the left in the corner. Pivo is the Slovene word for beer, therefore a pivnica is a beer hall (or as close as you get to one in Slovenia). Indeed, this isn’t like your usual café-bar as it does feel much more like somewhere for drinking alcohol only rather than coffee. There are no windows which I suspect may make you forget the time and spend longer here than you originally intended. The seating is a mixture of slightly raised booths around the edge...Read More

Slovenia's Beer Scene - An Overview

Best Of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Quote:
When I first started visiting Slovenia in 2004 there was always a choice of two beers, Union or Lasko. Generally if you asked for one of those you’d get the lager beer, occasionally a request for Lasko would get the response ‘Zlatorog?’ which is the name of the lager the brewery produces. In those days both breweries made a dark beer but it was always assumed you’d specify the dark if that’s what you wanted. Both brands are available nationwide but Lasko, made in the town of Lasko just south of Celje is the preferred brand of people east of Celje (as a general rule of thumb) while Union, brewed in Ljubljana is more popular everywhere west of Celje. Lasko are the sponsor of NK Maribor, Slov...Read More
