One of our more upmarket meals was enjoyed at Magnolia, a rather nicely thought out retro 70's themed bar. I particularly liked the different array of brightly coloured 1970's style tiles covering one corner of the bar area, and the mezzanine level, which gave height, space and light to the interior. The set dinner at Magnolia was a little higher than we paid normally at 17 Euros a head – for an extra 4 Euros we got a full bottle of very nice wine for 2. I'd recommend you go for the wine deal if you want to drink with your meal. I believe the set meals at 25 Euros on a weekend, which seems a little too pricey for what you get, so I would visit mid week if you have the chance. ...Read More

When visiting Barcelona, one of our little habits is to take a walk through the swanky port area at the end of the Barri Gotic area, across the road from the Christopher Columbus column. There we stretch our legs, take a look at the boats in the harbour and to indulge in a little shopping at the little mall (including the fantastic but expensive Desigual outlet). At the shopping mall grab your camera for some good shots via the mirror panelled ceiling. Many people don't wander as far, but through the back of the shopping mall through the rear exit are a couple of bars which tend to be quieter places. One of the places we drop by, because there are usually seats rather than any great love o...Read More

Bar Heaven Barcelona

We decided to have a night cap in the bar just along from our hotel at #20 Escudellers. In days gone by, no doubt this was a very small family owned little bar as the tobacco stained vaulted ceiling and fan that looks like it could have been exported from Cuba remains. At the time of night we visited, I couldn't see the name scrolled in chalk above the door, but the following morning, I deciphered the word "Heaven" from the gothic letter face. Some people really have no imagination about what Heaven might look like. This is part of the party area of Barcelona, and inside on the wall is a load of peeling photos of young people having a good time. It seems the place catered more to...Read More

Hotel | "Good Budget Hotel in the Heart of Old Town Barcelona"

The Hotel Comercio is in a great location in the centre of the old town, down towards the docks. Barcelona is too large to have a real location that has the best of all worlds but this hotel is good for old town and the docklands area. The only place that is a little too far to easily stroll to on an evening is back out to the more modern part of the city. As I like to lose myself in the seamier side of town, it is an ideal location for me. 20 years ago this area was the place to find a prostitute and drugs, but today it feels a lot less edgy with hoards of tourists milling around bar hopping and fewer locals eying up the "marks" from shady doorways. While it means the area has lost some o...Read More

Restaurant | "So so Restaurant offering Spanish Indian Food"

Four our first evening in Barcelona, we decided not to stray too far from the confines of our hotel, and just a little stroll up the backstreets, we were confronted by a restaurant offering a choice of set menus at 10.50 and 12 Euros and a man telling us it was the best food in Barcelona with a drink included. As we couldn't be too troubled to think or spend a lot of time mooching around, we accepted his offer of a table.Inside, my heart sank just a little as there just seemed to be tourists dining inside; I didn't spot a single Spaniard. A bottle of wine was produced for the table and it was far from the best, although drinkable with food. The water we also ordered was the "free" drink an...Read More
