Previously a hospital and asylum, the historic Jerome Grand Hotel is probably one of the most noteworthy sites. Situated on the upper most street on Cleopatra Hill, this pastel yellow building with maroon awnings can be seen from quite a distance. The lobby is small, easily correlating to the 1926 single style elevator with gate and the narrow staircase adjacent to it. A single settee with photo album on coffee table completes the entry. While only guests have access to the elevator, one floor up is the Asylum Restaurant, which includes an outdoor patio overlooking, took the town.Liberty Theatre Museum and Gift Shop is another historic site. Built in 1918, it showed silent m...Read More

Castle Dome Mine Museum and Ghost Town is my favorite "western" town thus far. Not only are there some 35 buildings are restored to the point of containing antiques, across the dirt road is the actual mining area complete with bunkhouses and mine shafts. Rather off the beaten path somewhat near Quartzite, it is probably better to describe its location as being close Castle Crags State Park in western Arizona. Here, one of the more photographed sites is Castle Dome itself that some climbers compare to half dome in Yosemite.I really liked the fact that I could walk into the service station behind the old gas pumps to find a warehouse of auto supplies and a room off to the side with a cot ...Read More

Visiting Jerome takes you back in time when people lived and worked in the late 1800's. Jerome State Historic Park takes you back in time to the world of mining itself. The Douglas Mansion, built in 1916, serves as the museum, which houses a scaled model of Jerome akin an ant farm. Of course, the tunnels are for mining mostly copper but also silver and gold. It was rather eerie to visualize people in tunnels under a thriving town, absolutely impossible to imagine what is was like when earthquake struck, and explosions went awry. Each room in the former mansion is devoted to a section of town's mining history, mining equipment, ores and their products, or photos of one of the major strik...Read More

Jerome's merchants sell from buildings constructed in the 1800's. Castle Dome's old buildings have remained in tact complete with furnishings as tour into the past. However Goldfield Ghost Town, origins from the very late 1800's gold strike, has become a theme parkAttractions include a 20 minute train ride skirting the outside of town with expansive views and 20 minute guided tours into a mine shaft. A jeep tour similar to the train ride is offered but if you want something more in keeping with the theme, try a carriage or horseback ride. All include narrations about the town and surroundings. Another way to see these sights is by trail riding or going on a jeep tour. There's gold pan...Read More

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park

Attraction | "Prison Haunts"

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park Photo, Yuma, Arizona
Quote:
Yuma Territorial Prison State Park includes a guard tower, museum and rows and rows of cell blocks. There is also a small prisoner's cemetery. Surrounding are nature trails, some of which lead down to the river. Not that I believe the prisoners were offered any day passes to explore if they had been on good behavior. The park is also remarkable near the train trestle that boasts "ocean to ocean" that was refurbished in 2002 to permit one lane traffic. While prisoners like to compare the place to hell and made claims that it was brutally hot, in truth, the surroundings, breeze from the water and shade weren't all that bad.Inside the museum were photographs of prison during its use, equ...Read More
