Restaurant | "A filling bargain lunch in Sitges"

For lunch, we were looking for a meal of the day deal as they seem to offer the best value. As you might expect, the restaurants in the back streets offer the keenest prices, whereas the places overlooking the sea are more pricey. We found a good compromise with a restaurant just over the road from the beach offering set 3 course meals for around 11 Euros each. The restaurant, the Eguzki Lizarran was busy with both locals and tourists, and what looked to be a large party of men wearing chef whites. Obviously, it seemed like an ideal place to stop. It was only when we left that we saw they were from the "Unilever Food Solutions" department that our bubble burst. I've never perceived food as...Read More

Restaurant | "Good cheap cocktails & food at the Rosa del Raval"

Wandering around the neighbourhood of our hotel in the Barri Gotic area of town, we found Mojitos for sale with prices between 4.50 - 7 Euros. Our friends knew a bar and restaurant, the Rosa del Raval a little off the beaten track where they were convinced they could snag us a better deal. As it turned out, the Mojitos were a mere 3.50 so they were right, and we also got to explore a part of town we don’t usually visit. The Rosa del Ravel is a nice looking student type place with Mexican food and styling – I particularly liked the brightly coloured decorations on the walls, and the bright mock sombreros displayed in a line behind the bar. While the place mainly attracts young people, it is...Read More

Attraction | "Characterful traditional bar in the heart of Barcelona"

We are always on the lookout for a real local experience, and the little local bar on Carrer de l’arc de Sant Agusti, the Bar Bodega Montse has local character in spades. The Bar Bodega Montse looks like it has pretty much stayed in the same shape for decades and I can imagine the likes of George Orwell having a glass of wine or two decanted straight from the barrel in a similar place during the Spanish Civil War in 1930’s Barcelona. Our friends have visited this friendly but most local of places quite a few times over the years. It appeared to have been run for many years by a mother and son; since the mother has either died or become too infirm to run the place, the cobwebs gr...Read More

Restaurant | "Good for cheap tapas and nice wine!"

We just happened to be passing by when we spotted what looked to be a modern looking brightly coloured but less swanky place offering tapas for dinner. As it was our last evening and funds were getting a little low, we decided to check Bar and Restaurant Kabara out.The Kabara restaurant was quiet when we visited, but I guess Tuesday evenings in this slightly off the beaten track part of town won't often get very busy. Our wait staff was an attentive and friendly woman and she soon seated us at a table (which looked like a large version of one of those paint splattered pieces of spinning card we used to produce as kids) and handed us a menu which bizarrely had a food utensil attached to the...Read More

Restaurant | "Good alternative bar in the Barri Gotic"

Los Alamos Barcelona Photo, Barcelona, Spain

Our Barcelona pub crawl ended in a rather hazy atmosphere at the Los Alamos near our hotel, the Comercio right near the port end of the Barri Gotic. When I first visited Barcelona two decades or so ago, this area was the haunt of drug addicts, retired prostitutes, and alcoholic port workers. Today if the price of alcohol is anything to go by this is one of the coolest places to spend your evening. The Los Alamos seemed fairly typical of the bars in this area; very long and skinny and housed in a solidly built stone building dating back some hundreds of years. As far as clubbing goes, I was always one to miss-time my partying, and in Spain where things are always slow to get li...Read More
