The Cheese Steak House

Restaurant | "Not quite like Philly, but close"

Quote:
When I was the tender age of just 20, I spent a year at college in the USA. I studied in Albany in Upstate New York, but also spent a lot of time travelling in the surrounding areas - New York City, Niagara Falls and Toronto for example. One city I was particularly keen to visit was Philapdelphia. Part of this was its significance in American history, particularly the revolutionary era. However, another major motivation was my desire to try an American culinary institution, the Philly Cheese Steak.Needless to say, I loved it. Hot beef and melted cheese, there is nothing about it not to like. Since then, whenever I have had the opportunity to enjoy a cheese steak, I have jumped at it. These...Read More

Restaurant La Villa d'Este

Restaurant | "Eastern Promise"

Quote:
Villa d'Este is one of the most surprising restaurants I have ever visited. From the street, it looks small and rather unassuming. Therefore, when a party of friends and stepped in side, I was not expecting too much fanfare. However, I was to be massively surprised by the size of the restaurant, by its rather lavish style and by some of the food on the menu.Villa d'Este has a small terrace outside. Basing my expectations on this, I presumed that I would find a small dining area inside. This was absolutely not the case. In fact, I found myself astounded at just how big it was. Not only were there two floors, but the main room stretched back and back, and then added an extra enclave of seati...Read More

Restaurant | "The Worst Restaurant in Nice"

Quote:
My girlfriend is Bulgarian. As our relationship began to grow, I quickly discovered how proud the nation is of its cuisine. Therefore, when she discovered that a restaurant named Balkan would be opening up in Nice and would be specializing in food from the Southeast of Europe, she became very excited. When she discovered that one of their opening nights would be a Bulgarian themed party, she could barely contain herself. All other plans we had were cancelled and a night of Bulgraian cuisine was penciled in.In the days leading up to the Bulgarian night, my girlfriend was bursting with excitement and expectation. Sadly, the problem with this is that if the restaurant utterly fails to meet th...Read More

Lao Vientiane

Restaurant | "Nothing Too Special"

Quote:
The rather inviting looking sign that hangs above the door of Restaurant Latiane seemed to have been beckoning me for weeks by the time I eventually decided to stop by and have lunch. Perhaps the prolonged period of anticipation served to elevate my expectations somewhat, because I was mildly disappointed with my dining experience. I would go as far as to say it was bad. I was just left rather uninspired by the food I ate.I went at lunch time and took the set-menu. This featured a starter a main course and a cup of espresso. In truth, things actually started very well. I opted for the chicken spring rolls. These came with a healthy helping of salad and were excellent. They were not too sog...Read More
