The Wee Dram

Attraction | "Have A Wee Dram To Toast Out 2011!"

I'd given up on finding a decent Christmas present for my fellas uncle (aka 'The Bloke Who Has It All') when I spotted The Wee Dram this morning on a flying visit through Bakewell. As you can probably guess from the name of the place, this shop sells whiskey - no, that's much too bland a description for this wonderful little whiskey specialist. The Wee Dram sells nothing but the best whiskies from Scotland and Ireland, as well as a few choice bottles from such places as Japan and Russia. Now, The Bloke Who Has It All is 90% tee-total but has a beautifully stocked drinks cabinet of all the top makes of different spirits. He prides himself on the good looking collection of bottles he's acqui...Read More

Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop

We had a weekend in Derbyshire last month, and when I texted my mum to tell her we'd found a place to stay in Bakewell she immediately replied to say bring her back a tart. Luckily we'd already spotted a quaint little shop called 'The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop' so this was the first port of call. Set in the centre of Bakewell Village, the Pudding Shop immediately caught my eye because of the prettiness of the exterior of the place. The whole of Bakewell village seems to be built with huge great blocks of stone, and the Pudding Shop is no exception. It looks quaint, with the dark green paintwork and white stone I almost expected to see an E on the end of the words 'Old' and 'Shop'. ...Read More

If you're in Derbyshire a visit to the historic town of Bakewell is a must. We spent a few days in a B&B in Bakewell and rather than just being the base we'd thought when we booked, we ended up spending most of our time in this pretty little town. Bakewell was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1085 and has one of the oldest surviving markets in the country, as well as a thriving cattle market and, of course, the Bakewell Pudding was first devised here. What I love about this town is the fact that it looks so old and untouched by time; if I had to describe the place in three words they would be picturesque, quaint and traditional. It's absolutely gorgeous. There'...Read More

During a recent stay in Derbyshire we decided to go on a random walk and see what we could find. We set off with some sandwiches, ready to walk miles in search of some little gem in the middle of nowhere. It turns out we didn't need to walk miles from our B&B in Bakewell; well, perhaps a couple of miles but Ashford in the Water is worth it. We'd driven past this tiny hemmed in village several times during the week we'd been in Derbyshire but it can't really be seen from the road. In fact the only reason we spotted it while walking was because my partner, an avid fisherman, spotted a bridge over some shallow water and went carp-spotting. The bridge in question is Sheepwash B...Read More

During a visit to Derbyshire, I ended up with a few hours to kill in the small village of Bonsall when my partner was called back to Birmingham unexpectedly. Now, any other time I'd have headed to the local pub with a magazine for a bite to eat and a few drinks but I had my three of my children with me so needed to find somewhere they'd enjoy. When I popped into a shop I mentioned to the lady behind the counter that I was looking for somewhere to take the kids and she suggested The Play Mill which was around a ten minute walk away; she has taken her grandchildren recently and had nothing but good to say about the place. After getting her to scribble vague directions down we set off to find it. ...Read More

If you're looking for somewhere to pitch your tent in the Peak District, then try Greenhill's Holiday Park. Located just outside Bakewell (home of the pudding), this campsite is a central enough base for you to explore the gorgeous Derbyshire countryside without straying too far from home and bed – well, tent and sleeping bag anyway! A few facts and figures before I launch into what I thought of the place I called home for the weekend. Greenhill's Holiday Park covers 12 acres of some of the prettiest countryside in the UK and is located in the mouth of the Lower Wye Valley. The park itself has space for 75 mobile homes and 100 tents, plus there are two fields in which privately owned perma...Read More
