This was the first of the two excursions combined in the City and Countryside Tour package offered by Old Quebec Tours. We were picked up at our hotel at 9:30 AM. Our driver collected other passengers from hotels around the city. Before beginning our tour, he traveled 15 minutes outside the city to drop off those who had signed up for the Ice Hotel tour. After that short deviation, he began narrating our re-entrance into the city.Quebec City is divided into two parts: Upper Town (Haute-Ville) and Lower Town (Basse-Ville). Pedestrians who don’t want to climb steps...Read More

We boarded the bus for the Countryside Tour in front of Chateau Frontenac at 1 PM. Just like our morning City Tour, the driver first made a detour to drop off passengers who had signed up for the Ice Hotel tour.My wife and I both liked the Countryside Tour much more than the City Tour. Our first stop was Montmorency Falls. As we exited the bus we could hear the constant roar of the half-frozen waterfall before we could see it. There is a path leading to a suspension bridge that traverses the falls and continues to its base. We were given 45 minutes to walk around the area. This 45 minutes of outdoor time was unexpected. Neither my wife nor I was wearing enough layers to deal with th...Read More

We had just returned to Quebec City from Lévis on the Quebec-Lévis Ferry and were doing some sightseeing in the Lower Town when we realized it was time for us to begin making our way to our next attraction: The Citadel (La Citadelle de Québec). We rode the funicular from the Lower Town to the Upper Town. From there, we walked along Rue Saint-Louis for approximately ten minutes until we saw the sign that pointed us to the Citadel. Although we had obviously arrived at the Citadel, finding the meeting place for the tour was a challenge. We kept walking along sidewalks, through entrances, and across driveways until we eventually found a sign that welcomed visitors. During the winter months, the Citadel o...Read More

Throughout the week, when the friendly people of Quebec found out my wife and I were tourists, they often offered suggestions on what to see during our visit. One of the suggestions we heard many times was to tour the Ice Hotel. We had already over-achieved on that recommendation when we spent the night there. The other suggestion we heard often was to take the ferry across the St. Lawrence River to the town of Lévis (pronounced lay-vee). We were told we could get a great view of Quebec City from there. The ferry runs every half-hour and costs C$6 per person roundtrip. The high temperature that day was a frigid 1°F. Needless to say, we took seats inside the heated boat and admired th...Read More

Attraction | "Outstanding Overview of the City"

Our final stop on our sightseeing outing was the Capital Observatory (L'Observatoire de la Capitale). Built in 1965, this 31-story skyscraper offers visitors an awesome overview of the city - visually and literally. It was C$10 per person to ride the elevator to the 31st floor. Once at the top, my wife and I spent an hour and a half walking around admiring the view of the city in all directions through the large windows. When not looking at the scenery, we were occupied with the various multi-media kiosks. I was sorry we did not start our vacation at the Capital Observatory because there was a short film called The Six Capitals that played continuously. The film gave an outstanding ...Read More

We had incredible meals at every restaurant we visited in Quebec City. We seemed to always spend C$50 regardless of which meal we ate. Restaurants in Old Quebec tend to be a little more expensive depending on when you dine. One strategy we used, thanks to the concierge at our hotel, was to try to eat at restaurants within the old section of the city before dinner hours. This allowed us to take advantage of la formule (fixed-price multi-course meals). The menus in Quebec often contain wild game such as pheasant, bison, wild pig, and caribou. At times, we had to ask for a descriptions of some dishes. For example, there was something called sweetbread that sounded like dessert but it i...Read More

We spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the Courtyard Marriott hotel and then again Friday and Saturday. Thursday night was spent at the Ice Hotel (Hotel de Glace). Having lived in a Marriott for 3 months during a work relocation, we had accumulated many hotel points. Consequently, our stays at the Courtyard Marriott in Quebec City were free. Additionally, we were upgraded to a suite each time - Sweet! We enjoyed our stay at the Courtyard Marriott. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping did an outstanding job at keeping our room spotless. My wife enjoyed working out in the f...Read More
