Of the "holy trinity" of curry houses along Thomas Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter, perhaps the best, but the least friendly is the Yadgar Cafe and Take Away easily identifiable through its bright red and yellow signage. I usually visit this restaurant early lunchtime, and there is usually the Muslim call for prayer blaring out on the radio and staff busily preparing for the lunchtime rush. I quite often get little more than an acknowledgement grunt and enquiring eye for my order, and then a quick bit of serving and my plates plopped on the counter top for me to take away to one of the Formica table tops. There is really no need to offer a tip at the Yadgar Cafe! The foo...Read More

Crown and Kettle

Attraction | "The historic Crown and Kettle Pub"

A contender for the oddest pub name must come with Manchester's Crown and Kettle Pub, on Oldham Road on the edge of the Northern Quarter. While it isn't my favourite pub in the world, it sells good beer and has a couple of diverse bar areas (one a little grungy with plain floorboards and the like) and the other two a little plusher. The pub has a fair amount of history having been an old court room until becoming a pub. The windows are the most striking part of the building, although today the pub stands on the side of an unloved and busy fast with street traffic. Inside are a couple of original plaster ceilings; one is on its last legs, with plaster collecting in the netting used to prot...Read More

Restaurant | "Grabbing a Quick Lunchtime Bite at the Al-Faisal"

It’s fair to say that much of the centre of Manchester is in a state of flux. The grand Victorian heart of the city has been supplemented by a recent flurry of grand new buildings, promoted by the repair work undertaken following the 1996 IRA bombing neat Victoria Train Station, and the holding of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the city. The area around Victoria Train Station is in particular a real mix; grand glass and steel buildings rub shoulders against crumbling old streets of Victorian Red Brick textile mills and merchants. Likewise, the shops, restaurants and bars reflect this strange transition. While some of the restaurants in the area cater for the city banking types ...Read More

Marble Arch Brew Pub

Attraction | "Fantastic home to the Marble Brewery"

Marble Arch Brew Pub Photo, Manchester, England

The Marble Arch Inn isn't technically in the Northern Quarter but it is about 15 minutes walk further out of Manchester onto the Rochdale Road and well worth the detour, particularly in the summer as there is a nice looking beer garden to enjoy the sunshine. The Marble Arch Inn is the big daddy of the small Marble Brewery, which sells beers across the country to select bars and owns 4 pubs of its own. While my favourite remains 57 Thomas Street, it might be worth going to the Marble Arch Inn if you want a full cooked meal as the food menu is a little more extensive. Main courses seem to come in at around £10-£13 a dish, so it isn't particularly cheap, but it is very nice. Once, again the p...Read More
