Quote:
The museum can be found at 4 Lipowa street which is about three kilometers southeast from Krakow's Old Town historical centre. Apparently parking is hard to find in the area so it might be best to park elsewhere and walk or use public transport. The nearest bus stop within walking distance of Schindler's Factory is Krakowska Akademia stop at Herlinga Grudzinskiego street. The closest tram stop is situated at Plac Bohaterow Getta square. Oskar Schindler’s extremely brave sheltering of hundreds of Jewish people who would otherwise have perished in the Concentration Camps just outside Krakow is a story that most people know well from the film ‘Schindler’s List’ which was based on a Thomas Ken...Read More

Attraction | "Auschwitz II - Birkenau "

BIRKENAU OR AUSCHWTZ IIWith Auschwitz the Nazis were fine tuning their techniques but in Birkenau they had got this down to almost factory assembly line efficiency. This camp is HUGE and in the snow it really did look bleak. The skies were dark and heavy with snow, the snow lay thick on the ground and it was really cold.Having only eaten a few bites of our lunch we were told our guide was waiting so off we went. The lookout tower and ‘station’ is recognisable from so many films. It stands as it was maintained but unchanged in anyway externally. In this building was a small shop but time constraints limited our going in there. I did use the toilets which were in the building to ...Read More

In 1940 Auschwitz was established as a concentration and it was only later as the Nazi machine became more hideously intent upon destroying entire groups of people that it became specifically extended to become a death camp. The first people to be incarcerated here were Polish often intellectuals and politically influential people other political prisoners, homosexuals, gypsies, Russians POWs and of course Jews, in fact anyone the Nazis decided they didn’t like really. This was a work camp, remember ‘Work makes you free’ and so daily work groups were sent out daily to do the bidding of whichever guard was chosen. The work parties marched past the band playing in lines of five so that they ...Read More

Recently we spent a few days in the city of Krakow, Poland and knowing we were going we booked a trip to visit Auschwitz and Birkenau (Auschwitz II). We have visited a number of places similar to this in Cambodia and Rwanda and it is not through any morbid curiosity but rather as a mark of respect to those who died there. I think it is all too easy to say I couldn’t go, it would be too upsetting but those who died had no choice and so I feel it is the least I can do to visit and learn about their plight so that hopefully by talking and writing about these things they may not happen again. The visit from Krakow is organised as a day trip and we were collected in a mini bus from our hotel. ...Read More

Galaxy Hotel, KrakowWe booked a great bargain city break to Krakow from East Midland Airport through a company called Broadway Travel. Prior to this I had never heard of them but it seemed too good a deal to pass up so we went ahead. We paid £135 per person for return flights and three nights in a hotel in Krakow and then an extra £20 for return transfers from the airport to the hotel. We were collected from the airport and brought directly to the hotel with two other couples by a very friendly driver who pointed out some of the sights on the way and gave us ideas of things to see and do in Krakow.ARRIVING:The first impression of the hotel was how very modern ...Read More

Restaurant | "It was good enough for high ranking Nazis"

Quote:
Hawelka Restaurant in the Jan Matejko or Market SquareWe were looking for a restaurant that served Polish specialities and a couple were recommended in different guide books including our favourite DK guide book of Krakow. The first they recommended was the Wierzynek and we went there having looked at their lunch menu posted outside the building. After asking the girl at the front desk in the chocolate shop part she said that it was the upstairs restaurant we wanted. She showed us a lunch menu for the restaurant downstairs and there was nothing that appealed so we waited to go upstairs. They were filming a Polish series and so we had to go right to the top. The waite...Read More
