Attraction | "It's all about the beer at the Red Rooster"

There's always something nerve wracking about revisiting a bar you frequented and enjoyed immensely as a youth. Brighouse's Red Rooster is just such a place. Back almost 30 years, I used to regularly visit the place and enjoyed the relaxed "greasy biker" vibe of the place, and the real ale. Of course things change as you get older, and my visits became less regular through the remainder of the 80s. It must be at least a decade since I last stepped foot in the place. Although many pubs have changed or gone downhill, thankfully, the Red Rooster is pretty much as I remember it – stone flagged floor, large bar and a few rooms of seating. The pub is one of those no nonsense types of places with...Read More

Restaurant | "Good for an Ingleton Coffee and Cake Foodbreak"

Before our hike around the Ingleton Falls Walk in the rain my beloved was determined to have a cup of warming coffee, and so we fell into the Curlew Crafts Coffee Shop close to the tourist information car park. To be honest, the "crafts" place of the shop looked like it could have all been chosen by a 63 year old village spinster. There were a lot of line drawings of the hills, post card style photographs, twee gift cards and tea cosies and door stops in the shape of animals galore. The patterned carpet in particular was a show stopper, as was the diner on the other table who looked like a young Richard Branson. But in and amongst this feast for the visual eye it has to be rea...Read More

Attraction | "Skipton's Art in the Pen"

We dropped by a sign on the outskirts of Skipton for Art in the Pen 2012, and as keen original art collectors we thought we would take a little detour just to see what it was all about. The Art in the Pen is a rather clever play on words as the event is held at Skipton cattle market. It took a creative genius to work out that the size of the animal pens are perfect for artists to display their wares. The venue is perfect as it's easy to find, has ample parking and is located on the outskirts of Skipton near the ring road. A sign to the entrance of the cattle market advised that the entrance fee was £2 per person, and collected by the car park attendant. Inside the r...Read More

Attraction | "Love the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail"

Ingleton Waterfalls Trail Photo, Ingleton, England

One good thing about a very wet British summer is that the waterfall trail in Ingleton is going to be spectacular. This was our main thought as our plans for taking a long hike in the Lake District was written off by poor weather. You can get to the start of the waterfall walk on the edge of Ingleton village. If you can, park your car at the falls car park, the £5 per person admission includes the cost of car parking. Like idiots we paid a further £3.70 to park near the tourist information stand so as to reacquaint ourselves with the location of the falls. Although the walk is pretty busy the falls walk is one of my favourites and repeated probably half a dozen times over the...Read More

Attraction | "The Hepworth Wakefield"

The regeneration of Wakefield city centre was long overdue, and was given a considerable boost through the building of a nice shiny and new museum dedicated to one of the cities most famous children; sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The Wakefield Hepworth is a fairly brutal and flat building from the outside, but designer David Chipperfield has created some fantastic exhibition space inside, lighted through natural light and with impressively huge windows looking out onto the rather dour Wakefield outside. There is a newly built bridge between the car park and the museum, which gives a nice view over the little marina. The museum cost £35m and together with the spanking new shopping centre, Wak...Read More
