Thanks to the 1000 Places to See Before You Die page-a-day calendar on my desk at work, I became curious about what it would be like to spend a night in an ice hotel. The original one is in Sweden but these days, ice hotels are popping up all over the world. I did a Google search and came across Canada’s Ice Hotel (Hotel de Glace). It is located near Quebec City. I booked the Adventure Package mainly because it included dog sledding, an activity I always wanted to try. It also included a back-up room at the nearby Four Points by Sheraton Quebec hotel in case our room at the Ice Hotel became unbearable. After getting che...Read More

Overnight guests are not allowed in their rooms until after 9 PM. The night of our stay, Quebec was experiencing its first major snowstorm of the season. This made the place look even more magical. Inside the Ice Hotel, overnight guests were hanging out at the Pinnacle nightclub. The bartender was serving drinks in ice glasses. My wife and I mingled with our fellow guests from around the world and participated in an ice carving activity. At 11:15 PM, it was time for mandatory sleeping bag briefing at the Celsius Pavilion (warm building next to the Ice Hotel). Guests are provided with Nordic sleeping bags that are good for temperatures as low as minus 22°F. Given the temperature...Read More

We did the V.I.P. Behind-the-Scenes tour on the morning after our stay at the Ice Hotel. This tour took us to areas of the hotel that are normally off-limits to visitors. My wife and I, along with a couple from Toronto, donned hard hats and reflective vests as we followed Pierre, our outstanding tour guide, for the next hour. He gave us a tour similar to the one given to National Geographic when they did an article on Hotel de Glace. The construction of the hotel takes several weeks. Construction does not begin until they've had at least three consecutive days of 23°F. This presented a problem for the opening of the 2012 season because the weather in November and December 2011 was so mild....Read More

A dog sledding excursion was included in the Ice Hotel Adventure Package we booked. We were shuttled to Aventures Nord-Bec Stoneham to take part in this activity. After signing a release form, we were led down a path and over a bouncy suspension bridge to the dogsleds. I originally thought my wife and I would be sitting on a sled while the guide did the mushing. To my surprise, the guide showed me to my team of dogs. He had my wife sit on the sled and me stand behind the sled holding the brake (metal blade that digs into the snow) until he finished giving me instructions. Since we were in the French-speaking region of Canada, the...Read More

The Four Points by Sheraton Quebec hotel was included in the Adventure Package we booked for our overnight at the Ice Hotel (Hotel de Glace). The Sheraton served as our back-up room in case our overnight at the Ice Hotel became unbearable. Our room at the Sheraton was comparable to rooms you find at most chain hotels these days. It had free Wi-Fi; however, I noticed the room we were given did not have a microwave or refrigerator. This was not a concern since we did not plan to eat in our room. For that matter, we did not even plan to stay in it. Our package included an incredible four-course dinner and a hearty breakfast at the hotel’s Le Dijon restaurant.I was most impressed b...Read More
