Restaurant | "There is Nothing Like a Dame"

My Dutch friends Ineke, Marit and Theke took me to Leiden for the afternoon and we chose to eat dinner at De Dames Proeverij. The restaurant stands on the canal-side in the heart of the old town of Leiden. It’s situated in an old historic building and it’s ever so pretty. The interior is characterised by lots of stripped wood painted in pale dainty colours. The wooden tables are laid with sparkly napkin rings and pretty pale lavender coloured glass candle holders. The napkins are thick, heavy fabric and everything looks fresh and bright. If the waitress had said "Go away, you’re too early, come back later" I would not have been surprised but she made no comment at all about the crazy timing and just b...Read More

Café Oslo in Amsterdam was the choice of a colleague who booked a table and then cried off, leaving us without any particular idea why she chose it other than it wasn’t too far from our horrible hotel. It’s located in the south western suburbs of the city close to the outermost tip of the Vondelpark. It’s hard to imagine you’d come across it unless you were actively looking for it as this isn’t an area where tourists tend to go. I believe that it’s worth the effort to go and hunt it down. We arrived by car so I can’t give you any tips on how to get there by public transport but any hotelier should be able to offer guidance. On arrival I thought we had the wrong entrance door because every...Read More

Restaurant | "Lovely food - but no booze"

This week I was back in Amsterdam yet again and staying at the Novotel on Europa Boulevard. This is the Novotel near to the RAI exhibition centre. Whilst it’s a nice enough place to stay, if you stay there as often as my colleagues and I do, you soon get very fed up with the restaurant menu. My French colleague Dominique was spending the entire week at the hotel and desperately wanted to eat somewhere else. I suggested that we head north along Europa Boulevard and Europaplein, towards a street where I knew we would find lots of different restaurants from which to choose. It’s a bit of a bleak walk at night as there are few people around once the RAI has closed and you need to pass under the railway li...Read More

The lowest of the lowSometimes you just know instinctively that a hotel is going to be awful. If it’s a Dutch hotel chain I will have already preset my expectations to be quite low before I even get there. If it’s the only place in Amsterdam with any availability because there’s a trade show in town and even the places you’d normally only consider ‘at a pinch’ are already full, then it’s a fair guess you’re booking in at the ‘Last Chance Hotel’. The Bastion Centrum Zuidwest is that hotel. It’s spectacularly annoying and its staff all need training, although perhaps reprogramming in the ‘water-boarding and pulling out fingernails’ direction might well be too good for them. I sat on the bed ...Read More

Room with no CharmInto the lift, up the stairs, opening the corridor door with my passcard and eventually into my room where I couldn’t find the light switch. It turns out that the light switch only actually activates one tiny strip light in a corner of the room. All the other lights – a small table lamp on the desk and two down-lighters, one above each bed, have switches on them. My room had a red carpet with grey or black dots on it. The carpets were striped in shades of red that kind of go with the carpet. So which designer imagined that shiny browny-gold striped satin bedspreads went with the red? Since the room was really cold, I tried to pull up the bedspread for extra wa...Read More
