Restaurante O Lagar

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Worth a visit just for the mayonnaise"

Quote:
Restaurante O Lagar is situated in a small remote village in the Douro region of Portugal, about 7 kilometres outside Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. I have visited this restaurants at least three times now on my trips to Porto and the Douro and each time the restaurant has been packed out. It is popular with locals and visitors because of the very high standard the owners set. The standard of the food and service is excellent and the wine list isn't bad either for this isolated part of the Douro. The range of wines on offer cover not only regional wines but many International wines also. I was also impressed with the very fine wine glasses - unusual in this area as wine is usually served in a glass cu...Read More

Church of St Francis (Igreja de São Francisco)

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "A very glamorous church on the Ribeira"

Quote:
The church of Saint Francis is a very glamorous church; over the top in decor with splashes of gold everywhere. It was also blessed but due to its wealthy grandeur the blessing was taken away and the church ended up being deconsecrated.I have never really seen anything as grand as the inside of this church which is situated on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique on the Ribiera, Porto. From whatever angle you view the inside you can’t help squint with the gold decoration. Apart from the wooden pews and tiled floor everything you see is gold.Originally the church was built in a medieval Gothic style and it wasn’t until the 18th century when the interior was given a new look. Fundacao Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporanea

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "A good collection of modern art galleries "

Quote:
There are many galleries in Porto but I guess the most prestigious of them all is collection of modern art galleries known as the Fundacao de Serralves. The museum/galleries are located in Lordelo do Ouro (Boavista), a little way off the centre set in luxurious gardens upon a hillside designed in a grand French way. You can find this exact spot just south of the Avenida da Boavista and boy, is it fascinating. The grounds alone are beautiful with dazzling fountains, lakes, parks, lots of tall trees and rolling farmland. Not what you would expect in Porto but yes, it’s all there. The two buildings which house the exhibitions are pretty impressive and very, very big.The Museu de Arte Contempor...Read More

Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro

Best Of IgoUgo

Hotel | "A pousada that's worth the price"

Quote:
The pousada I am about to review is Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro, situated in a small, unspoilt village bearing the same name. Its location is in the Braga district of the Minho region of Portugal. The building that now houses the hotel/pousada was once a Cistercian monastery built in the 12th century. Over the years the monastery fell in to disrepair until only the stark, granite shell was left. Santa Maria do Bouro is a good base to visit the Peneda-Geres National Park - an area of high mountains, green valleys, running streams and vast open lakes. In 1997 extensive work took place and the empty monastery was converted into a hotel with a restaurant. The outer ...Read More

Casa Mariana

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Good quality local restaurant in Afife"

Quote:
Casa Mariana is a restaurant that has been situated in the same spot for over fifty years - across from the beach at Afife and just up the coast from Viano do Castelo. The décor is typically rustic Portuguese with wood panelling, arches, long pine tables and benches.Upon the rough plastered walls are decorated pieces of pottery mainly large plates with traditional folk designs. There is a light and airy feel to the interior because of the large windows even though they have tie back curtains. Dining areas consist of two rooms which have a seating capacity for 130 guests. The restaurant is suitable for large groups and special festivities and celebrations like weddings and baptisms....Read More
