Hotel | "The AC by the FC"

Quote:
The AC Porto is situated in the Antas area of Porto city, a district which was built up a few years ago for the European football cup and it’s very conveniently placed for access to the major football stadium. Perhaps the testosterone charged atmosphere of the game accounts for the design of what is one of the most overtly ‘manly’ hotels I’ve seen in a very long time. If you are old enough to remember Mickey Rourke when he was still handsome, the hotel rooms look like they’re an ‘homage’ to his apartment in the film ‘9 1/2 Weeks’.I was dropped off by my colleague who lives nearby. She’d chosen this hotel because it’s handy for her to ferry people around and it meant we could go out for din...Read More

Essencia Vegetarian Restaurant

Restaurant | "Veggie Heaven"

Quote:
Typical veggie restaurants tend towards the macramé and sandals ‘vibe’, wholesome in their earnestness with a tendency to serve food in the grey-brown area of the colour spectrum. Essencia is very different – a lot more ‘Elle Deco’ and a lot less ‘Spare Rib’ in it’s appearance. The place looks like it should be really expensive and very trendy – not like it’s a haven for the tiny minority of Portugal’s population that eschew the local love of chorizo and salt cod in favour of face-free food. I suspect that back in the days of the Portuguese Inquisition, not eating steak would probably have got you burned at the stake. The Portuguese love meat and I’ve been subjected to far too many evenings of so-call...Read More

Bar Tast at Hesperia Sant Just Hotel

Restaurant | "Don't order too much"

Quote:
Bar Tast is located in the Hesperia Sant Just hotel in Barcelona. The hotel has a more formal restaurant called 'Alambi' but this doesn't open until 8.30 in the evening and can be a bit too dressy if you just want a quick meal. As there are few restaurants nearby, if I'm staying at the Hesperia, I tend to eat in Bar Tast. You could stand at the bar and nibble on tapas but most people take a table in the room. There's plenty of space and I've never seen the place particularly busy or had to wait a long time. The menu is small and looks pretty simple. There are salads, tapas dishes, pizzas, sandwiches and hot dishes. There is – confusingly – little to suggest the size of the dishe...Read More

Restaurant | "Rice? Not so Nice"

Quote:
My colleague Soledad can always be depended upon to know lots of good restaurants, often ones that are well off the tourist radar screen. I was visiting our Barcelona office to interview candidates for a job and Sole invited me and another colleague for dinner. He couldn't make it – well it was a silly thing to even have asked him since Barcelona were playing Madrid that night and Eduardo had his priorities firmly set on the football. Sole picked me up from my hotel at quarter to nine and we headed to the restaurant. I don't really like eating quite so late but in Barcelona the restaurants have barely switched their ovens on if you go any earlier.El Vell Sarria is located in the Sarria dis...Read More

Restaurant | "Eating at the Tennis Club"

Quote:
In the rather unlikely event that you find yourself in the Barcelona suburb of Sant Joan Despi, accidentally wandering into the middle of a large industrial and office zone near the TV3 centre and you just happen to feel a bit peckish somewhere round lunch time, then fret not! I have the perfect recommendation for your lunch. How do I know this place? Well luckily for me it's practically the substitute canteen of our office in Barcelona. If you hear people saying they're off the the tennis club it's more than likely it's for an excellent 3-course lunch and not a couple of sets.El Pi Restaurant & Terrassa is the restaurant of the Club Tennis and Moli St. Joan Despi. Don't worry there's...Read More
