Attraction | "Walking the City Walls"

Walking the old town city wall is an obligatory part of visiting Dubrovnik. The wall encircles the old town and while the views across the city’s red roofs are memorable, it is the views outside of the old town that really impress. The main period of building was during the 12th – 17th centuries. The wall runs for almost two kilometers and reaches a top height of 25 metres. Once a line of defense it is impressive that the wall has been so well preserved that it is still possible to tour the entire route. Audio guides are available to hire for an additional cost but it is equally nice to wander around at leisure and enjoy the many great views from the four sides of the old city....Read More

Prior to our rather delicious meal at the Excelsior, we had been given a short tour of the hotel and this included an overview of their spa facilities. I had been impressed what I had seen and on examining the list of treatments more carefully, I had been pleasantly surprised to find that they were quite affordable. Fortunately you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel in order to book an appointment at their spa. They offer a comprehensive range of manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, make up and massage treatments. We were immediately attracted to the list of massages, which included a 75 minute hot stone massage for a very reasonable 395 kuna (£45 / $72).We managed to call...Read More

Rising up behind the old town is stone wall of Mt Srdj. It is now once again possible to scale the hillside by way of the cable car, which reopened in July 2010. In 1991, bombing damaged the popular tourist attraction and closed it for almost twenty years. While a return ticket isn’t particularly cheap (80 kuna), it is worth it to get a birds eye view of what is a spectacularly beautiful city. The other option is to walk up although speaking to a lady who did it, the hillside path isn’t very clearly marked and is a little challenging to find. The cars leave fairly regularly although staff misinformed us about the return trip time and we rather annoying missed a car down so if you have an a...Read More

Attraction | "A Perfect Half Day Trip from Dubrovnik"

Lokrum Island Photo - Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Quote:
Lokrum sits less than a kilometre away from Dubrovnik, separated by a stretch of sea water just wide enough to allow the island to retain its wild independence from the city. The name ‘Lokrum’ derives from the Latin work ‘acrumen’, which means ‘bitter fruit’. Orange and lemon trees have been on the island since ancient times and in more recent years, Lokrum has expanded its flora collection with the addition of a large botanical garden. Boats to Lokrum leave every hour from the old port of Dubrovnik and cost 50 kuna (£5.75 / $9.20) for a return ticket. The journey takes less than fifteen minutes, making Lokrum ideal for a day or even half day trip from Dubrovnik. And in October...Read More

Perched high on Old Rupa is one of the city’s quieter museums. It’s not just the backstreet location that makes this museum less frequented, it is also the fact that unlike old monasteries and cathedrals, the idea of exploring an ‘ethnographic’ museum probably doesn’t appeal to many tourists. To be honest, it didn’t even appeal that much to me, which is partly why I thought I would check it out: to do something that I normally wouldn’t. The museum is laid out over three floors and provides a fascinating insight into Dubrovnik’s success as a city over the ages. The exhibition begins by giving an overview of the building, which was originally built as a granary. The local council too the dec...Read More

At the top of the dark stairs of this gallery is a quote by Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz. And no, I’d never heard of him either. Fortunately his quote is easier to remember than his name: "War is a continuation of politics by other means." Mr. Clausewitz died in 1831 but his quote is as relevant today as it was in his time. The photographic exhibitions span two floors, with the permanent ‘Blood and Honey’ on the upper floor. Ron Haviv’s slideshow of the wars of the former Yugoslavia that broke out in 1991 is presented with an audio montage of news reports, singing crowds, protests, music and the chatter of everyday people. It is the coverage of people going about their business, o...Read More

The Argosy Hotel Photo - Argosy Hotel, Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Argosy Hotel is located in the Babin Kuk neighbourhood, about a fifteen minute bus ride from the old town. Buses are quick and frequent but it’s still a bit of a schlep to get to most of Dubrovnik’s places of interest and with bus tickets at over £1 (almost $2) a trip, travel costs can add up over a few days. The hotel itself is quiet and clean. After a swift check-in, we were directed to our double room on the ground floor. Our room had a sliver of a sea view and a wide balcony overlooking orange and fir trees that were windswept by the sea breeze. The room itself was a good size with a white bathroom with powerful shower and a hairdryer. The double bed was incredibly wide...Read More
