The best places for live music, I think, are the Dog House, Ivory Jack's, on campus at The Pub and The Howling Dog. Also the Marlin if it ever reopens - we are axiously waiting. There are the Chena Hotsprings, about an hour out, Manly, Circle and Tolavanna hot springs are futher out and sometimes access to them is limited, ie. crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, or snow moblie.

Quick Tips:

LAYERS, dress warm use layers. Lots of people, me included, do not have running water so if someone smells bad do not take offence. On long trips outside of Fairbanks make sure you have a full tank or extra in gas tanks.

Best Way To Get Around:

We have a small bus network and taxis. In the summertime, a bike is great, as Fairbanks is flat.

When I first arrived in Fairbanks, this is one of the places that gave me the "Alaskan experience". It is a small resteraunt/pub within walking distance of the university. So, even though it was -45 F, we students can walk there. It gets pretty crowded on Thursdays as they have live blue grass music. Upon walking in, I saw all sorts of different people. I entered into a conversation with an old hippie, a gold prospector, a physics grad student, and a military guy. I never saw so many different people in one place. Fairbanks is small, so a good venue draws all sorts. It is great. Not only does The Dog House have a great atmosphere, they leave plain white paper and crayons at each table. They also have good food. They have pretty large portions. My favorite is the chicken finger meals, 10 dollars, a big salad of mixed greens and veggies, what looks like three chicken breasts sometimes in a tortilla chip batter piled thing and garlic bread and a side. I can never finish.
