Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal

Attraction | "Beautiful!"

This is Montreal's oldest Catholic cathedral, built in 1656 and found in Old Montreal. It's a pretty average looking church from the outside and you do have to pay an admission to go inside. However, I don't mind paying to contribute to the upkeep of such a historic building. The admission fee is also worth paying to view the stunning interior of this church. The stained glass windows are beautiful during the day, the altar is exquisite and the ambience is serene. This is a perfect place to sit and reflect and meditate or just soak up all the fine art.The time to visit though is in the evening when they have an illuminations, which really brings the church to life. The light show is narrat...Read More

Attraction | "A mountain in the middle of Montreal!"

I have to say prior to my visit to Montreal I didn't realise that it was named after a mountain (or a very large hill, (764feet) if you've just travelled through the Rockies like we had) that is in the middle of the city. The first European who scaled Mont Royal was Jacques Cartier in 1535 and named the mountain after King Francois I, King of France. History aside, our reason for visiting Mont Royal was because it is in the centre of Mount Royal Park, one of the largest greenspaces in Montreal. I think we cheated a little because we drove up the slope, but we saw plenty of cyclists attempting to cycle up the mountain. So I suppose if you are super fit or like a good fitness challenge that's one thing ...Read More

This huge park, right near the Montreal Botanical Gardens (which is in fact part of it), was originally built for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. We visited it after our day in the Botanical Gardens and I have to say it must be one of the most breathtaking views of Montreal we saw. The highlight of our visit was a trip up to the top of the spaceship like construction along a cable car on a 45o angle. Once at the top you can view the whole cityscape of Montreal and a breathtaking view of Mont Royal. The tower is around 175 metres high and the tallest inclined tower in the world. We were herded through to a waiting area and then made our way onto the funicular. This went pretty rapidly up the out...Read More

O.k. so as a twenty-something I have to say visiting botanical gardens wasn't really high on my list of things to do in Montreal, however, have done lots of things I wanted to do I had to make a concession for my Mum. We had had a busy day sightseeing and so thought it would be a nice relaxing way to spend a June day. The gardens are quite easy to get to, you just hope on a subway or catch a bus and get off at Olympic Parc. You could also cycle here very easily from downtown Monteal, which I think would be something really enjoyable to do on a nice day.It doesn't really seem to matter when you visit the gardens, as they have displays on all year round. However I have to say that initially ...Read More

When travelling across Canada by train with my Mum, I wanted somewhere that we could walk to from the train station and this hostel fit the bill. I also wanted somewhere that wasn't too lairy or young for my Mum, so the YWCA seemed like a good choice. Also it's quite nice to know that when staying somewhere, the revenue from you could be being used to help empower local women. We were only in Montreal for a paltry 30 hours, so we wanted to be quite central, which this hostel certainly is. We managed to walk to it with our bags from the main train station, which was just under a mile away and flat all the way. The area that the hostel is in seems to be safe enough to walk around, both day an...Read More
