Un Petit Nid

Restaurant | "a traditional Laos restaurant"

Quote:
For lunch we were taken by our guide to Le Petit Nid, just opposite to the restaurant where we’d eaten last night. He’d telephoned in advance so the staff were ready to greet us as we arrived and we were taken to the reserved table. It’s not a large place (only about a dozen tables in total) but has a very friendly and homely feel to it. We were to enjoy a banquet meal of about 7 courses – a meal that would serve as introducing some of the Luang Prabang food to us in a gentle "westernised" format. Now the problem with eating this way is that the food just flows towards you and you have nibble sized portions, nothing to really get your teeth into.Le Petit Nid is a small homely, a...Read More

Restaurant | "Eating with the locals"

Quote:
Our guide had mentioned the Somchanh restaurant when we indicated that we wanted a restaurant close to the hotel. We’d had a long and tiring day "on our feet" and didn’t feel that we could walk too far. As it was only a five minute stroll from the hotel and was a restaurant for locals rather than tourists it sounded an attractive proposition. We turned off the main road and headed for the river and as we approached the bottom of the road we heard music and assumed that would be the restaurant. We believed that the restaurant was on both sides of the road but the reality was that the restaurant was outdoors on the banks of the river. As we crossed the road we saw that the live music was in ...Read More

Tamnak Lao Restaurant

Restaurant | "great local food in this historic building"

Quote:
We had asked our guide about which restaurant he could recommend to us for good quality local food. He didn’t have to think long and suggested that we try the Tamnak Lao Restaurant which he said was only about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. That estimate proved to be a little bit on the ambitious side as I reckon it was more than double the time. It was straightforward as we only needed to walk along the main road, through the Night Market (see separate review) and then on to the last block of restaurants on the edge of the town.We were well ready for a sit down when we got there and there seemed to be a surplus of staffing to greet us. Two young girls at the entrance smiled and I paused...Read More

Restaurant | "Not in a hurry...."

Quote:
The choice of tonight’s eatery was taken from the Lonely Planet Guide and it turned out to be a longer walk than we’d bargained for. This is a very small restaurant with no more 10 tables and you’ll need to have you night vision glasses with you because the lighting is very dim.As we arrived we were told by a couple of diners that the food was excellent and this confirmed that this low key looking restaurant might be worth a try. We were guided to a small table for four by the only adult that we saw on the staff. Then a small girl came to take our drinks order (four Lao beers) before disappearing into the back kitchen. Her older brother brought the order and the girl, who later struggled t...Read More

Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel

Best Of IgoUgo

Hotel | "A great hotel in a UNESCO site"

Quote:
The Maison Souvannaphoum is a small 25 bed roomed hotel close to the centre of Luang Prabang. The hotel was the former residence of Prince Souvannaphouma and has recently been re-furbished and opened as a hotel. We found the staff very friendly and anxious to please and they responded very efficiently when we discovered that our air conditioning was not working. An engineer was working on the problem within 5 minutes of raising the problem and when it was clear that it would take some time we were moved into another room. I did indicate that we preferred our initially allocated room which was slightly bigger and they undertook to ensure that all our baggage was moved from the temporary roo...Read More
