Hermanus in South Africa’s Western Cape is the main centre for whale watching off the coast, and in fact they have a whale festival here every September and even employ a whale-crier to blow a kelp horn when one is spotted. Between June-November you can often spot them from the shore as they come in close during breeding season, and indeed we spotted quite a few at various places along the Western Cape coast. Although there are various other whales you may spot the most common in the Southern Right Whale, so named because it is a meaty whale that swims slowly and floats when it is dead and therefore was a good one to hunt back in the days when whaling was allowed. As an alte...Read More

Cape Agulhas in South Africa’s Western Cape region is the official southernmost tip on the continent of Africa. It is the official designated point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet (although the exact point fluctuates). Previously it was thought that Cape Point, further to the West was the southernmost point but this has since been disproved. As you drive into the small town of L’Agulhas you will see claims for all the establishments to be the southernmost everything – pub, café etc.We parked up just out of town near the Cape Agulhas monument and lighthouse. It is a short walk to the monument which marks the official dividing line between the two oceans and is an obligatory to...Read More

Mugg and Bean are a large coffee shop and casual dining chain in South Africa. I had seen several branches during my travels through the Western Cape but I didn’t get to experience one for myself until Hermanus. Hermanus is the main point for whale watching tours and we were certainly peckish after our time on the water. The boats are in a slightly different part of Hermanus but it is not far away. This branch is situated in the main shopping part of the town, on the edge of a shopping centre. It doesn’t have its own lavatories as I understand it – you have to use the shopping centre ones which are accessed by a small coin, so keep some change handy. Unless of course you time it well and someon...Read More

I stayed at the Aanhuizen Guest House in Swellendam, just off of South Africa’s Garden Route for one night. The town is just over two hours from Cape Town. It is privately owned and the decision to stay here was made by our tour company. As a tour group we were able to dine in at night, which is something that other guests may not be able to experience, but I recommend enquiring. The Guest House is within the Swellendam town but I am not sure how centrally located it is as we arrived after dark, but there did appear to be some shops and banks on a street not far away (walking distance). I cannot comment how safe it is to walk around at night however. The Guest House has two buildings...Read More

Botlierskop Private Game Reserve Photo, Mossel Bay, South Africa
Quote:
Botlierskop Private Game Reserve is situated on South Africa’s Garden Route near the towns of Mossel Bay and Knysna. It is a private reserve rather than a National Park. It is smaller with limited animals, but the animals are protected and the Reserve is not like a zoo (although the lions are sectioned off, for the posterity of the other animals). There is a limit to the number of animals that can be kept and the Reserve has a breeding programme, and some animals may then move to one of the big National Parks (where the animals are officially wild) or be sold to other Private Reserves. Whilst I would have loved to do a safari again I one of the big parks, this is expensive and not close to where w...Read More
