La Favola

Restaurant | "Not Particularly Worth the Wait"

My girlfriend and I had been planning to visit Favola for many weeks before we actually stopped by for dinner. We had planned to spend our anniversary there. However, we were put off the rather limited menu, which focused mainly on pizza and pasta with only one or two main courses. During the following weeks, though, every time we passed by it, there was a line of people waiting to be seated. So, eventually, we decided to try it.The menu was, indeed, rather limited. There was a good selection of pizza and several varieties of pasta. We decided to overlook the paucity of main course options and opt for pasta. I had nut-based ravioli whilst my girlfriend opted for a rather lavish rigatoni di...Read More

Emilie's Cookies and Coffee Shop

Restaurant | "Not Very French"

For those who are convinced that globalism is slowly eating away at the culture and identity of individual towns and cities, the fact that there is not a single branch of Starbucks in the city of Nice must come as something of a boost. However, for those who prefer their coffee sweet and served in large mugs with plenty of milk as opposed to dark, bitter and in tiny cups, this is something of a problem. When I first arrived in Nice, I found it extremely difficult! Thankfully, to fill the void somewhat is Emily's.Emily'ss sets itself up in a very American vein. The coffee comes in large recepticles and there are plenty of muffins and cookies to go with it. The espresso cups and croissant ta...Read More

Attraction | "VIP = Not V Impressve"

Quote:
I did not enjoy my evening in VIP. Part of this could be because I am now in my thirties and in a long-term relationship, which means I no longer feel the need to be frequenting night-clubs in search of pretty ladies. However, it might also be because VIP was just a particularly unimpressive night-spot. My girlfriend and two friends of ours (another couple) headed to VIP after dinner and drinks at our apartment. We were looking for a bit of glamour and excitement out on the town in Nice. Sadly, we did not find it.VIP was not our first choice. We had stopped by a couple of other clubs in the same vicinity, but had found them much too busy. We wanted to be able to sit, but that proved to be ...Read More

Ma Nolan's Irish Pub

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Not Particularly Irish"

Quote:
I am no great fan of Ma Nolan's. It is the embodiement of one of biggest pet peeves, Irish bars that are not remotely Irish. Having lived in several cities around the globe, I have tipped back a few pints in all manner of 'Irish' bars. Some of these were fantastic and fet really authentic. The only thing some others had that bore any resemblance to Ireland was the green sign - an evening I spent at the James Joyce in Istanbul where I drank Heineken and ate a cheeseburger is testament to this.Ma Nolan's is not as bad as some of the other places I have suffered through. And, it manages to tick at least a few boxes. It serves Guinness and is decorated with lots of dark wood. However, beyond t...Read More

Wayne's

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Loud and Lively"

Quote:
It was a bizarre situation. I had not seen my friend Francesco since we had worked together in China a year and a half before when he suddenly called to tell me he would be passing through Nice later that very day. I was excited to see him and we were both very keen to sink a few cold beers. With such an evening in mind, there was only one place we could possibly go, Wayne's. Whilst Nice may have countless options for romantic candlelit dinners, there are slightly fewer choices when it comes to raucous locations for a few beers with the guys. Because of the scarcity of options, Wayne's is almost the default choice for a heavy night on the town.Situated in the heart of Old Nice, Wayne's has...Read More
