When looking for a place to stay in Venice, I always tend to gravitate towards private apartment rentals as we've had good experiences doing this in the past and seem to find much larger, good location places for great prices compared to the higher-priced hotels in the city. This past trip we found one of the most beautiful apartments yet, in such a convenient location near the Rialto Mercato. The "Charming Rialto Market Penthouse" was listed on vrbo.com and after some good communication with the manager, Judit, we decided to book.As soon as we arrived we were very impressed with the loft-style apartment. Very upgraded and modern, with still traditional flair, this place is per...Read More

Because during my last trip to Venice, I was with a few first-timers we decided to take one of the 1/2 day boat tours to the neighboring islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello. After doing some research we signed up through Viator for the 4hr tour leaving from the Alilaguna Piers near San Marco. They offer one in the morning and one in the afternoon each day. If you're pressed for time, or would rather not do the navigation to the islands on your own (or through public transportation), this could be a good option for you. It's a decent price (around $29pp) and definitely gives you an easy way to get a surface visit to each of the islands...plus see parts of Venice from the water!...Read More

One of the highlights of Venice in the morning is definitely a visit to the famous Rialto Mercato (Rialto Market). Taking place off the Grand Canal just one stop closer to the train station from the actual Rialto Bridge, this market is a hub of activity with locals and visitors. This historic market has been going on in one form or another since early 1000's. All over this amazing city you feel like you're part of something from the past, but actually taking part in a market makes you feel less part of a stagnant piece of history, but a lively piece that is still similar to what it was years ago. Fisherman, meat-sellers, and produce vendors all gather early in the morning rolling out their ...Read More

For our first dinner in Venice we went to a nearby restaurant to our room, where the owner of our vacation rental apartment recommended. Ostaria al Garanghelo was just a street over from us in the area of the Rialto and seemed nice enough to try. It's located on Calle dei Botteri which is lined with lively cafes, shops and restaurants, and offers several outdoor tables out front. We just waited a few minutes before a table opened and took a seat on the street where we had a good view of the activity on the alley during dinner. The servers here were very nice, almost seemed like it was a small family-run restaurant and everyone was related. It's pretty small, although there were s...Read More

After asking around with some locals on where to grab a quick and cheap bite for dinner, we headed to Nono Risorto not far from the Rialto. We had a hard time finding it initially through all the narrow Veneice streets, but asked four different shop owners and all of them knew it immediately and kept pointing us on the right path. With so many locals in the know about this place, I was expecting a smaller quaint place, but was surprised when we arrived to a larger open restaurant full of activity and lots of tourists as well as locals enjoying dinner. The first room is a big open dining area with the open kitchen so people can watch the wood-fire pizza oven in use. People were hu...Read More
