FOUR CORNERS
This is the only place in the USA where four states meet and the Navaho people who own the land in the area have created a monument where you can have your hands and feet in each of four states and have your photo taken.

The four states that meet at this point are Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Apart from the monument which has been constructed as a tourist attraction there is nothing around her. It is pretty much desert and not especially scenic. The original marker was erected in 1912 and this was a simple cement pad, but now it is a very sleek granite and brassmarker.
The Visitor Center is open year round with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. As you enter the area you are greeted at a ticket booth and have to pay an entrance fee of $3 per person which goes to the Navaho nation and the National Park ticket does not apply here. You then drive to the actual site which looks a bit like the back of market stalls. This is not surprising because that is what it is. There is a square of market stalls surrounding the monument. You park the car behind the stalls and then find a gap and walk into the square.

We were ‘lucky’ as a coach load group of Japanese or Koreans were there when we arrived. We watched then take their photos and some were hilarious. One man bent over hand in each state then a foot in each state and then his lady friend lay on top of him doing the same! They had a photo to prove it. I also took a photo but can’t seem to find it which is a shame as it was a sight to behold. I tried to make my daughter and her partner repeat the performance but they were not playing the game!

Luckily after entertaining us with their posing for photos they left in their coach and we had the place to ourselves virtually. Once you have posed on the monument there are the stalls to enjoy.
My husband is not a shopper but I enjoy a look. There were lots of local Navaho crafts and the usual tat and some postcards. We bought a small hand painted pebble with the four corners on which had been painted by the lady behind that stall or so she told me. There was some nice jewellery, lots of pottery and other fabric crafts and they were not silly prices if you wanted something.

Never one to pass a toilet when on long drives I did visit the facilities. They were pretty yukky and the door was a bit tricky to lock but as someone was sitting just outside I hoped she would tell anyone that I was already in there. I took my own hand wipes and tissues and this is a necessity when visiting. However it served the purpose and luckily I always carry my hand sterilising stuff and we all used plenty to ensure cleanliness.

This was a real tourist spot and had no other claim to historic fame or anything, it is simply the only place in the USA where four states meet and so you have the opportunity to be in four states at the same time. The area is very remote and there is no running water, no electricity and no telephones or mobile phone signal .

There are a few picnic tables around but I would say that there are nicer places to picnic. This monument is really isolated and I would suggest that you make sure you have plenty of water and you want some food or snacks you will need to bring them with you.

I wouldn’t say it is somewhere you must see but if you are in the area it is worth a bit of a detour to visit just for the novelty value. It is nice that the Navaho nation has been able to make a bit of money from this and it is a bit of fun to visit.
